The LiveTable experiment

Post by Snarg of Wildpaw on Thu Oct 10, 2013 2:02 pm

So I was looking around for some other replacement mapping programs because the progarms I've used so far suck. Everything else seems to be some standalone program that everyone has to download and/or purchase. Roll20 is the closest thing to something that everyone can just use, but it's a bit clunky, requires signing up, a lot of configuration, and doesn't seem to work for everyone.

Long story short, I got frustrated with the lack of quick-and-easy options so I've just decided to make my own browser-based tabletop mapper. It'll be built using the HTML5 canvas so it can run in about any modern browser without any additional plugins. It should also work for tablets, so you can manipulate it using touch interaction.

I started it last night and this is what I've got so far. Name is WIP: http://thethirdgames.com/livetable

Blog updates on progress at: http://thethirdgames.com

It's pretty bare bones right now, although it's not even a day old so that'll change quickly. What's important is that it seems the proof of concept works and that the HTML5 canvas can be used to draw the table top and the pogs. You could technically use it for a small map right now if you so desired, although the most (maybe more like all) of the ease-of-use stuff isn't in yet so ... good luck.

If it really comes down to it, I may use it for basic maps during the Savage campaign since it'll be easy to just give everyone a link to view the battle grid.

Any ideas, comments, etc, are welcome.

Great initiative, Snarg.

Sadly, I can't think of much stuff to add right now, mainly because of how little it has right now.

Great idea man. Suggestions so far:

1. Slightly larger squares would be easier to see.

2. Roll over display for the names would also be very useful and less cluttered when you need to use a large amount of tokens or the players want to do clustering of any kind.

I'm really liking the custom tokens.

Thanks for the suggestions!

1. Yeah, something for this is actually in-place, I just don't have anywhere you can set it yet as a user. I'm not stressing the UI elements just yet. Don't worry though, there are plans.

2. Same as above.

Right now I'm concentrating on getting events flowing from the server to the client smoothly; that's what I was working on for the little time I could tonight. Seems to be doing okay though, so hopefully some of the more juicy things can be worked on soon.

You're welcome. I'll try to help in my own limited way as you make progress.
