Week 24, Day 7 of 113 TA
Week 24, day 7 of 113 TA. Time was not at the Zenobian fleet's side that day. They were approaching the end of their journey through the jump node and would finally meet whatever was on the other side. The entire fleet would launch their ships at once and take a defensive formation around the Zenobia once they reached real space at 2314 hour, like wasps ready to defend their nest.
The general direction of the mission, should hostilities become impossible to avoid, was having the Reliant act as a distraction by abusing of their barrier systems and speed, while Courageous and Pathfinder would assist the Celestial on acquiring alien material and/or live specimen, hoping that the Zephyr scientists can quickly find more about the enemy and hopefully use this information to gain advantage in that conflict.
Should victory by military force become impossible, Captain Nagant was be ready to advise the fleet's admiral to make a jump through one of the other nodes nearby. At the very least, the large mass of the Zenobia would block pursuit attempts for hours should the Album use similar space travel technology, and running into the unknown was a better idea than certain defeat.
Or at least that was what Toombs and Mateus were able to gather from the documents sent to their new handheld ASPL devices, commonly referred (wrongly) as Holo-PC, for HPC for even shorter. Great tool to have around and keep all your documents, music, photos and videos, but it was also sometimes distracting when not properly configured, which was the case as global configuration synchronization of military devices was not allowed for security reasons. Hopefully they'd solve the configuration details later.
From outside the gates, the soldiers of this base can be seen wearing simplistic versions of the terran naval uniform as if to keep with the ancient theme of this sector, although the maroon with black details of the uniform are still there. In fact, all soldiers seems to be checking and moving equipment to the back of the base, in the directions of the space docks. The guards at the gates quickly return your attention back to, and direct you to a large building about 150 meters from where the gates stand as soon as they confirm your identities and clearance, then salutes you in the traditional terran navy way, their right fists in front of their chest about 5 cms from touching, right in front of where their hearts should be, and the right arm as horizontal as possible.
You quickly identify this building as administration. Mateus notices, based on one 'making of' of a movie he watched long ago, that someone took their sweet time to make this building and the others around look older than they really are. As go past the manual double doors, which Toombs points out to be made of wood of all things, and enter the building, you are surprise on how much everyone seems commited to this 'ancient earth atmosphere' in this sector by a single example: there's a man wearing a grey jumpsuit and cap, and using a wooden-looking pole attached to a mass of coasce strings, dipping this strange pole every so often into a bucket filled with some kind of clear liquid that produces a bit of white foam when agitated, and has a pleasant yet unknown smell to it. There's also small plastic-looking yellow thing on the ground that reads "Caution - Wet Floor" close to were the man stands. The sight of this man's clothing and what he was doing is so alien to both of you take the time to talk a bit to this man, Francis, and learn that he's the 'janitor' of this building, and his job is to make sure everything is clean, stocked and presentable in here, because there's no automation for that here in this sector.
"Excuse me sirs, good day!", a jovial voice from behind you takes your attention back to what you were supposed to do, and Francis quickly tips his hat and goes back to his duties. The voice belonged to a young man on his twenties, featuring dark skin, seemly fit, and sporting a high and tight haircut, and of course wearing the same uniform as the soldiers outside. He quickly salutes both of you.
"Lt. Commander Toombs and Lieutenant Mateus, right?", and without waiting for an answer, the tall young man continues to speak, "I am Spaceman Wright, and I've been instructed to show you around the base. Please follow me."
Upon entering, you see the small hall with a marble-looking floor arranged on a checker pattern. To the left is the entrance to a dining hall, with a counter separating it from the kitchen, with a few people inside eating breakfast, consisting of many kinds of bread, cheese, meat, fruit and juice. To the right, there's an open door, from which you can hear a few people talking and the sound of a TV turned on, with a glance revealing it to be a large hybrid of a living room and a recreation room, with a few strange tables and machines, and a large cabinet at the corner.

- That's 11:14PM, Terran Society uses military hour, with the standard for the start of a new day being 0000 hour.

- If you can imagine omni-tools as wristwatches, and without all the magical stuff, you got the idea of what a HPC is. The solid images it creates are slightly warm to touch and very fragile, and usually float in air.

- Spaceman is the lowest rank of the terran navy, and most of the terran navy ranks are parallel to the real world navy.

- I'm just curious if there's a lore reason, and if we're aware of it, for the historical recreation tidbits? Not that I mind, just curious.
Scratching his slightly disheveled chin, making a note to shave before the briefing, Fax glances over at his superior. "All this old crap, betcha they don't got rec-holos or sonic showers either, yah?" He grins. "My kinda place. I'ma go finds me a slab o' meat, see if I can't find somethin' to write with. How 'bouts you, sir?"

- You both are aware, but probably never had the time to visit as military personal on the Zenobia would be quite busy with patrols and such until now. Six of eight sections of the Zenobia are recreations of each of the 6 cultural bases spread along the solar system, which is in turn are each a recreation of one of humanity's cultural highs in known history, with appropriate culture, traditions and such. They are a romantic version of the real era they portrait, and there are a few tweaks here and there to make life just a little bit easier, specially on ancient cultures.
At any rate, these cultural bases were created with the intention of conserving the cultures of men no matter were they go, as almost all ancient culture was lost for good during the Machina era. The discovery of 6 vaults around the globe being and them being the only source of information about those eras was the final excuse needed for this project's birth.

"It's pretty wild, L-T. I'd heard about the recreations, but never got a chance to check any of them out." Javi adjusts his ditty bag on his shoulder. "Hey, mind if I join you for dinner? I thought I saw a place on the way in and it's a good excuse to walk around. What do you say?"
- ooc:
- I read that sailors and marines refer to their duffel bags as ditty bags. Seems appropriate.

Fax hesitates a second, as he considers for a moment, the smile dropping from his face for barely a second before re-affixing it. "Sure, why not. Hopefully it's better than ration packs and swill, hm?"

"For sure. I'll just drop off my stuff and we can go." Javi enters his room and tosses his bag on the floor. He'd unpack later. Now was the time for food.
After a quick stop off in the bathroom to use the facilities and wash his face, he's walks out into the hall to wait for Lt. Mateus.

The Lieutenant hurriedly began putting his few things away; a picture of his mother, a small poem, his medallion, his holo-novels. Everything was placed in the right spot, arranged by his handy dandy ruler, before he finally exited and made his way out into the hall. "Sorry, s'wasn't set yet." He frowns as he scratches his chin. "Dammit, forgot to shave again... So, what spikes yer fancy tonight, hrm?"

"I'm not even sure what they serve," Javi laughs. "Let's go see what we can see and find a place that sounds good." He walks downstairs and spots Spaceman Wright. "Hey, want to ditch the leash?"

Wright turned around and looked at both of them, plenty surprised and a bit confused, "But what about the base tour, sir?"

"Damn." The kid was good, he'd give him that. "No, we are just taking a detour first." Javi motions for him to follow and then walks outside.

He was pretty sure the restaurant was to starboard so he started walking in that direction.

- What do I see? Especially looking for restaurants open at this time. Also, I reread your first post and I didn't spot any reference to time except the mission start time. I'm thinking we conflated it with the actual time. Just something to keep in mind in the future.

Javi remembers passing by a diner considerably close by the base, about 800 meters from the entrance. Should they get access to one the bases' 'cars' or whatever, it shouldn't take long to go there if someone could drive it. He was also reminded there was food in the dinner hall inside the dormitory by the good smell of bread and coffee that his nostrils as he passed by it.
- OOC:
- The very last paragraph of the first post gives you current time and when you should be onboard of the Reliant. Anyways, it's 0932 hrs by the time of your lastest post.
Oh, and the building you guys are living is actually a 'dormitory' instead of a barrack, because there's a distinction between the two words in the terran navy. Dormitory for officers-only building, and barracks are big shared buildings for sub-officers.

Spaceman Wright looks dumbstruck at his superior officer and mumbles something about protocol for a second or so, but then answers him in clear voice, "Yes, sir!"
The spaceman starts jogging in the direction of the base, and after about five minutes or so, he returns with a loud, rugged vehicle painted solid olive green, which unlike the other vehicles you saw outside the base, was considerably small, older-looking, had no doors and no roofing.
"Sir, where are we headed to?", Wright speaks while stopping the vehicle right by them.

Re: Week 24, Day 7 of 113 TA
"Yes sir.", said Wright, and started to drive to their destination. "Oh right, I know where that is. Some of the people in the base go there often. Cheap food and the taste is good for the price. But I don't know if they have 'Grits', never went there myself."
It the group a little more than 3 minutes to reach the diner, with little to nothing going on besides the strange building architecture that you had saw on your way to the base already. The spaceman asks politely for his superiors to hop down and enter the diner while he'd park the 'Jeep'.
The diner itself was a elongated building painted white with simple details in blue and red, and big letter on top of it made by some kind of red-colored glass tube that reads "Cindy's".
Upon opening the door to the diner, you both hear a sound coming from your top-left. While neither of you have ever saw it, you have read about bells and how annoying they could be. At least today was full of new experiences, not to mention that now that the door is open, the smell of food can reach your nostrils and remind you how famished both of you are right now.
A high-pitched voice welcomes them soon after the bell rings, "Hello, welcome to Cindy's. Please take a seat, I'll be with you two in a moment." The voice came from a slightly overweight yet attractive woman on her late 30s of white skin, reddish long hair kept in a ponytail, wearing black pants and a checkered shirt. She seems to be taking care of other costumers at the moment, which prompts both of you to sit and wait, maybe take a look at the place.
But not before your HPCs vibrate on your wrists just enough to force you to pay attention to them. A quick tap on them pops up a small message windows in the air that says "Warning: Unscheduled rain starting in 10 minutes", together with a check box in case you don't want this kind of alert to show again.

Fax frowns down at his wrist for a moment. "Unscheduled? Really?" The thought rolls around off his tongue as if he can't decide if he's amused or irritated. He glances down at his attire, quickly patting one pocket to ensure his cigs are still there. "I guess that'll wait." He reaches out to where the vid-plate should be to figure out his order and just as quickly retracts with a bit of a grimace, realizing it isn't there. Looking around the table and then the room he mutters, "How's the hell we supposed to order?"

"Unscheduled what? Anyway, sir, the menu is right there.", says Wright to answer Fax's question while pointing to a large white board with what you think to be some kind of red and blue plastic letters which says 'Serving breakfast all day' and well as everything they have here. Fax was able to find grits in the menu, which comes with a side of bacon and an egg. In fact, they let you add more bacon, eggs, sausages, ham to anything in the menu for an extra.
The place also has omelet, pancake, waffles, french toast, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pie, ice cream, sundae, soda, iced tea, lemonade, coffee, juice, milk and shakes. Fax and Javi probably only heard about a quarter of those things.
"Unscheduled rainstorms?! Why did I not get any messages?", Wright looks at his own wrist when he hears Javi's question, then taps his HPC once, then twice, and does some sweeps in the air with his fingers, probably in private mode as neither of you see any popups, and then mumbles to himself, "When did I turn off the vibration func--- oh nevermind, I remember now."
Then he remembers he was asked a question and clears his throat, "Ahem, excuse the delay, sir. Sector F is based on a time where you only knew it was going to rain if you paid attention to the sky or access to primitive weather forecast, both of very low precision, or so is written in the Database. So a good part of the rainfall is unscheduled, but at least have a 10 minute warning around here. Now, if you don't mind, I need to go back and prepare the roof of that jeep. Oh, and I've already eaten, so nothing for me.", he said turning to neither of you, then turns around and exits the diner, followed by a ringing bell.
The waitress finally was already approaching your table, and starts talking to both of you, "Why was be boy in such a hurry, it's just a little water, right? So! Have you darlings decide what you eating? Today's special is double cheeseburger with the chef's secret hot sauce."

The waitress starts giggling for a moment before saying, "Ooh, now that's a challenger! Double cheese with double secret hot sauce, and a side of carrot on the house, just because I like people with guts. Like them in cubes or sticks? Raw or cooked?", and then turns to Javi since Fax looks like trying to remember something.
"That's the juice of a sweet fruit the size of a fist, with a red skin when mature and white inside that becomes mushy and brown if you take too long to eat. I really like the flavor, and it's a hard fruit to get outside sectors E and F, due to 'cultural constrains'. Just check the Database with your HPC if you are still curious."
Back to Fax, he fails to remember how much he had on the bank besides it being a very low number. But that's what the HPC is here for! A few taps and swipes show him actually having 10,021 C on his account, as one 'Zephyr Corporation' transferred ten thousand credits this morning at around 0500 hrs. Huh.

A few taps and swipes show him actually having 10,021 C on his account, as one 'Zephyr Corporation' transferred ten thousand credits this morning at around 0500 hrs. Huh.

Re: Week 24, Day 7 of 113 TA
Fax blinks at the money amount for a moment, jaw rolling around, before he nods and closes the HPC again. "Raw, if'n ya please. Straight outta the ground werks too." His spare hand went for his pocket again, though he restrained himself from pulling out his cigs for a second time, reminding himself of polite company. Almost as an afterthought he realized he was being unsociable again and quickly put on a smile for the lady, though a bit more manic than he intended.
