Bleakheart
Smoke and ash filled the air, mingling with the slick scent of blood of races far and wide. "War makes corpses of us all," Talltail of Wildpaw muttered grimly. What was left of his arm was resting in a sling ripped from a fallen comrade's shirt, preventing it from tearing off completely. The pain of it was not high pitched, merely a low, dull, repeating thud that never seemed to leave the stump. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump.
A Kobold lay nearby, both legs having been blown completely off, eyes listing as the blood-loss slowly got to her. "Better to die for a good purpose," she whispered slowly in Undercommon, "then to live for a bad one."
Talltail's grimace didn't twitch. A week ago the thought of one of his friends being blown to bits in front of him probably would have elicited a reaction, but one can only react so many times before it all goes dull glass. Instead he knelt down beside the woman, his one good paw barely sustaining his weight as he rested. It'd been almost an hour now since the fighting had stopped in this area, and the silence hung on the air like a lead weight. His hand trembled as it struggled to grip his spear. Thump. Thump. Thump.
"Reckon we did good by our tribe?" the woman asked, slurring her speech slightly. She was speaking in informal tones, as if to a family member, and between the shock and the blood loss it was entirely possible she was. This was no way to go.
"We did good." Talltail looked down at her hand, saw it was missing digits. "We did good by them. We didn't stoop, we didn't fall. War's gotta end someday, but it never will if we don't let it." His paw was shaking badly now, but he only had a few moments. Thump. Thump.
The woman's broken hand clenched, a few last spasms before the end. "There never was any hope... was there?"
Talltail couldn't bring himself to lie; not here, not now. Raising the spear for the strike, he whispered. "No, there wasn't."
Thump.

And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy?

Two Elsewhere posts. Love these.
And the war seems as bad as we suspected it to be.

I fully expect you to post something uncompromisingly happy if we ever manage to affect the continent for the better.

To be hailed as heroes would feel good, that's for sure.

Re: Bleakheart
Screw that. I wanna hear about puppies running happily among the flowers on a sunny day while Slivina goes out for a picnic with Gnawbone and Radnall.

I want to hear about the Wildpaw tribe thriving to the point it becomes a danger to the rest of the continent until they conquer everyone in a sea of blood and eat Moarsmen eggs as delicacies.
