On the boat towards Sho (1st of March)
- Disclaimer:
- I thought long and hard about this and I came to a conclusion. For the sake of the unity of the party, I decided to post this thread. Some of your characters may criticize Zeiss for his actions and the choices he makes. Knowing his backstory and how his mind work (having carefully crafted it so that everything makes sense from an in-character perspective), I can only sympathize with him. But I understand very well why other people might not feel the same way. Which is why I have, for the past few months, done the best I can to change him from "evil" to "neutral".
But what I do has a limit. It would be a lot easier to do if one member of the party tried to befriend him. If one of you would like to try to get closer to him, and possibly change him for the better, here's the occasion. I would be perfectly okay if no one replied to this post. The reason I am doing this is to give the party a chance to soften him up.
Hint : don't tell him how he should act, think or feel.
Zeiss was leaning himself on the boat's guardrail, looking at the ocean. Rainbow was playing behind him with a little ball he bought for her. From time to time, he would look at her, smile a little, then return his attention towards the water.

Re: On the boat towards Sho (1st of March)
Heavy boots thump as someone makes their way up the stairs from below deck. Snarg emerges from a hole looking somewhat worried and scanning the floor. Out of the corner of his eye he spots Zeiss, causing his ears to raise in that direction. Clearing his throat, he adjusts his gear, his multiple armaments making a distinctive knocking sound, and tromps over to Zeiss, joining him on the railing.
"Heh, this is just how my last trial started," he chuckles half-heartedly before dropping the act and adopting a more serious, yet calm demeanor. "So ... missed you at the meeting. Could have used your help explaining what to do. Something else going on?"

Zeiss gives Snarg a curious look and unconsciously gets tense. For a moment, he examines him to figure out what exactly he wants.
"...No. I'm killing time right now. There's nothing to do on this boat. I did sneak around a little, for practice... Why? You need me for something?"

"Could have used you at the meeting we had, but no, not at the moment." Snarg sighs and scans the water. "Lots of nasty things out in the water; making some people on here uneasy," sniffing the air a bit, he relaxes and leans on the railing, mirroring Zeiss' stance as he puts his attention on him. "Looks like it's leaving us alone for now though; good for us. So, Zeiss, The Exchange is taking off. What are your plans for that and yourself? I don't mean just about the heist, I mean long-term. If you had your way, what would you be doing years down the road?"

Re: On the boat towards Sho (1st of March)
Rainbow looked for a few seconds at Snarg but quickly returned her attention to her ball when it decided to roll beside her. She then entered a wrestling match with it. Zeiss took a quick glance at her, using this time to come up with an answer Snarg would find satisfying. Then he says in a serious tone :
"Assuming I'm not dead by then, and that all my enemies are dead, I suppose I will try to do something positive with it. Maybe offer affordable healtcare, some scholarships... or create an army that would take care of problems like the Tumeroks and the Pinnacle."

"That kind of sounds like an answer to make me go away," Snarg says jokingly, grinning a bit, "but yeah, I guess you would want to go after them; I can understand why." He turns to look out over the water again for a bit, his lopsided grin fading to a quizzical look as he turns back to Zeiss.
"Sounds like you're planning on doing that all by yourself. Heck, it seems like you're even wanting to go at this whole mission by yourself; training alone; not meeting with everyone else..." he pauses for several seconds before continuing on, "why's that?"

Re: On the boat towards Sho (1st of March)
Zeiss gives a flat answer.
"You misunderstand me. First of all, the kind of training I am following requires that I stay alone. Secondly, I do not need to attend a meeting where we would rehash things I already know. And thirdly, I do not plan to face these multiple organizations alone. That would be suicidal. Which is why I am putting all my efforts into the Exchange..."
He pauses for a few seconds, then say :
"This is not like you to come talk to me."
He turns towards Snarg and give him an interrogative look.

Re: On the boat towards Sho (1st of March)
Snarg shakes his head sadly. "That's all still just 'you', Zeiss. I'll tell you why I'm coming to talk to you: we're not working together and it's going to come back and bite us - me, you, and everyone else - if we don't start doing something."
He holds up a single claw in front of Zeiss. "There are other people who need you training, but you decide it's better to just help yourself with it - even with a mission coming up where it might be useful for others to have it."
Another claw goes up, counting to two. "I know it may be boring to hear stuff you already know, I understand, but learning isn't the only reason. We need to be unified; we need you to teach us - especially for a mission like this; we need your support in all of this."
Snarg opens his mouth to speak again and raise a third claw, but hesitates a moment before completely dropping his paw. "Aw, let's forget the whole point thing. We're all here to help each other, Zeiss. We want to help you and have been trying, but some people have the impression that you don't want to help or are even working against us. I'm coming to you before they do because I still have faith in you and want to be your friend. We didn't go through all that business in Holtburg to let it mean nothing."
"Prove them wrong, will ya?" He holds out his paw for a handshake, "we need you - really we do. Everything that's coming up isn't anything that any of us can do alone."

Re: On the boat towards Sho (1st of March)
Zeiss looks down at Snarg's claw.
"You want me to help you?"
He glares at him, then continues with an irritated voice :
"I haven't stopped helping you. I could have sold the Leycite anytime I wanted while you were gone on Aphus Lassel. I kept the Skyclaw's existence a secret despite the political prestige the Exchange could have acquired if I had told Lady Lightmane. When I learned that the group was at the Air Temple and Rekarg told me he could take me there, I went to make sure all of you were okay. And when it came down to saving Higaide from the Tumeroks, and possibly find Hanuel, I was there. But what did you do, O mighty Snarg, when I told everyone that my friend might have been captured by the Runners back in Janwall? You went shopping! You didn't even go save someone else. You didn't go help some refugees back in the streets. You just went shopping to pass the time, even though I needed your help. But even then, I continued to help the party. I came running after you, ready to fight, when you got captured by these guards in Marblebush and your plan to steal their clothes failed. I made sure Rory's mother was safe because he didn't take seriously the threats made to his family. And I still didn't tell anyone about Z, even though she treats me like a fahrbot when I simply try to talk to her."
He paused for a few seconds.
"So don't you dare say that we need to be unified. It's pretty clear that trust in this party goes only one way when it comes down to me. The truth question is, why should I trust any of you again? Except Gwydo, of course. He came to Janwall with me to help after all."

- Specifically for Zeiss, but anyone can read:
- Speaking of which, you haven't seen him since getting on board the ship... In fact you can't recall anyone seeing him.

Re: On the boat towards Sho (1st of March)
Snarg's paw remains extended as Zeiss talks, his eyes narrowing. "I see," he says, his voice low and disappointed, "it's pretty clear you're in this for yourself all the way. You even said you're putting all your efforts in to the Exhange - not the world-ending threat that we're after. That was clear when you decided not to accompany us to the island, but we still tried to make it work. We've tried again and again to meet you halfway - we've even taken a town and are doing a job for you - but all you do is whine and complain like a spoiled pup when you can't have your way over others or we don't do exactly what you want. This 'shopping' you're referring to just shows how you're out-of-touch with everything except what you want; we were trying to save Higs' life! Why do you think we were having specialists brought it to look at him?" He retracts his offer or a paw and crosses his arms.
"How do you think everyone felt when you left them when we went to the Lassel? Especially after we risked life and limb to rescue you from prison? How we still came on your Exchange errand after you blackmailed everyone? How we're still going all the way to Sho to help your Exchange?" Snarg throws his hands up in exasperation and begins to leave.
"You've burned your last bridge, Zeiss. I was trying to be friendly; to work something out between us in spite of everything, but you're having none of it. We've tried yet again to meet you half-way, but you've just pouted, insulted, and turned your back. Even your Exchange wants nothing to do with you at this point."
Snarg walks back over to the doorway to below deck. Before he disappears below he looks over his shoulder at Zeiss with a tinge of regret on his features. "I hope you're satisfied. If I were you I'd leave as soon as you can. We can't protect you any more."

Zeiss looks like Snarg's words did hurt him.
"You only had to explain yourself and I would have said I was sorry. But we are we are are, huh...?"
He leaned again on the guardrail and continued to look at the ocean.
