Re: OOC Discussion
Just watched the videos you posted earlier. BLAM!'s lookin' pretty good. I got two complaints: first, drumsplosion effect for someone's foot taking a step. Whyyyyy that? Is he really tall? Is this the dramatic reveal of the main villain? Foot? Is his main attack Footsies? Second complaint: the bear. Whhhhaaaaat? I thought this was a seereeus anime. And I just think the searcher's name is funny. Is it "Kryll" as in he's "batty", or "Krii" as in "Krii" is all we have because the rest of his name got kriimated? I dunno, it looks like they capitalized the first three letters, and then might have either lowercase L's or uppercase i's. Also, is "searcher" going to be a title of a person who does...things? Great title. You know what would be even better? Seeker.
Witness the creatures you gawk and and adore from afar eat what you do! Now watch as they stand on two legs and speak in a rudimentary substitute for complex language! The lemur kingdom is night at hand! No mashed potatoes or gravy!? What madness is this!? I think they could have done better with the turkey, like took the meat off and made it a plate of loose meat chunks and little slabs. That's actually what we do with our turkey. One tried and the rest were like "fuck it".

Re: OOC Discussion
First, Rory, mega-props for calling "BLAM!" instead of "BLAME!", though i'm not sure if you know the history behind that name.
Second, and this is something a bit weird, but Nihei likes Bears. He first put one as a central character in Biomega (Kozlov Leifnovitch Grebnev), then did Knights of Sidonia and put a female Bear named Lala Hiyama, who is the one you just saw.
The part that sucks to me a bit is, they're actually showing BLAME! as an anime within an anime instead of it's own feature. Maybe they're doing this to test the waters, i dunno. BLAME! is very hard to adapt to animation, because of it's tone and pacing, so maybe they're showing it within Knights of Sidonia as a sort of safety net. They've tried twice before to adapt it, first as a series of OVAs that sucked (even though it showed me how to pronounce the name of the main character's gun), and the second never got past a couple of teasers, so i guess it's understandable that they're apprehensive about it.
But yeah, there's no bear within BLAME! itself.
As for that teaser, it's probably aimed at fans more than anything, because that's pretty much an animated remake of the very first few pages of the Manga (with a few extra bits, like the Eye Display in the last shot). It makes me hope that maybe they're really going to stick to the source material on this, which is gonna be a challenge.
Also, i don't know wtf they were smoking at the studio, but the main character is called Killy. And they know it, because that's how they pronounced it in the OVA years ago, so i dunno what is up with that. To say too much about the story would be spoiling, because even a synopsis would reveal more than what you know for the first few volumes, and to reveal all i know about the world would literally be more information than you learn in the whole story itself.
Still, i'm gonna link the few terms they spat out during the teaser, since they apparently don't care that you know that much from the very start: Killy is a dude searching the City for Net Terminal Genes. And when i say City, keep in mind that's just the term used to refer to the world in general, which is... kinda unlike anything i had ever seen before. As for Net Terminal Genes, you can pretty much guess a lot from the name alone. And i'll stop there.
I'll be honest, though, that was a piss-poor translation of just a few vital words. Also, the discharge from the Graviton Beam Emitter used to be blue, not red. Not sure why they changed that. And that explosion was extremely sub-par to what i've come to expect from the people who made and are still making Knights of Sidonia.
Oh yeah, "Gravitational Beam Emitter", i forgot that one. A more accurate translation would be "Graviton Radiation Discharge Device" or "Graviton Beam Emitter" as it's more practically called. It's Killy's gun (and yes, i know how to pronounce it in Japanese, don't tempt me), and will pretty much punch through anything you can imagine. Like, if Killy was on Alderaan in 0 BBY, the Death Star might've gotten wrecked. It's just that powerful.
Uh... you lost me with your second paragraph there.

Re: OOC Discussion
You did mention it before, K. I decided I'd call it BLAM! from now on. Hmm, maybe the bear's just a gimmick. It's clearly being self-aware in that moment when its advertising an anime within a teaser for an anime.
Tone and pacing? Anime's response to Game of Throooonnnnez! Hopefully they do it right.
Shorthand for gun, GBE vs GRDD? Nickname "Geb" or, even better, "gib"?

Re: OOC Discussion
Most people call it GBE, i just like the longer name better. As for Game of Thrones, i couldn't say 'cause i've never watched it.
I feel i should give you a rundown of what i mean by pacing and tone. Often a chapter will consist of Killy traversing a given space. That given space will often be architecturally... interesting (Nihei studied architecture before he became a manga artist, and it shows), but will often leave you wondering just what kind of structure you're looking at. You'll read little to no dialogue, and whatever hostiles Killy comes across, he may potentially be able to dispatch them in one shot, along with whatever structure is standing in it's line of fire.
Now, if you can gather the content i just gave you, and figure out a way to make an awesome series out of it, you've just made BLAME!.

Re: OOC Discussion
Nice one Zeiss.
So I watched the first episode of Knights of Sidonia. It's pretty interesting so far and I like that they are already touching on the use of tech for survival and the consequences to society. That's much deeper than I was expecting from a giant mecha anime. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Re: OOC Discussion
I'm glad you're liking it. Most people i know didn't really get into it until episode 4, and i went in like little a giddy little kid on Christmas because it was from the dude who did my favorite Manga (and i couldn't believe my eyes when i read they were actually animating something of his), so my perspective was tinted from the very start.
I'm more hesitant than i used to be about recommending things i like, and Sidonia, while more friendly than BLAME! or Biomega, is still very much a Nihei story, so i try to have a degree of caution.

@K Dude, that's awesome! Were they there representing the 501st or just Star Wars cosplay enthusiasts?
@Essoje I love "The Reward." Thanks for reminding me of it. Have you heard anything about those followup episodes? I remember they raised money for it but I haven't seen any of the episodes.

Well, in a nutshell, Arch is now babysitting for Xan. He explains this in his latest twitch upload. So this means the campaign, both party splits, is pretty much on hiatus again. And here we sit.

Wish i knew, but probably the latter. I wasn't able to attend myself, since Comic-Con only agreed to waive the entry fee for one person per Indie developer (and that took a good bit of convincing). I had already burned quite a bit attending two events in Lisbon, a few weeks prior (which had waived the fees for all Indies, thanks again to the Portuguese Videogaming Association pulling strings, but the transportation alone burned a hole in my wallet), so i had to sit this one out. Still the team did a pretty good job getting people to try the game out, including those armored gentlemen and bunch other cosplayers that were walking about.
Here's some more from the event, btw.
