I had to lengthen the title up there, it was just gonna be "Treme".

You get a lot of shows on TV. A lot of them are crap, making the occasional hidden gem all that harder to find. I've been following David Simon's stuff for a while now, first with Generation Kill, then with the Wire - the latter of which had been mentioned in one of those Honest Trailers skits on Youtube about how the only show that ever made white people shut up about it was Breaking Bad. Well, i never watched that particular object of mass worship, but i can tell you one show that made me forget about the Wire for a while, at least while i was watching it.

So, Treme follows it's namesake neighborhood in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and a handful of people affected by the catastrophe, directly and indirectly. If you've watched anything by David Simon before, you kinda know what you're in for, except this time, the ongoing struggle of every character is even more personal and abstract. There's no war on drugs, no incursion into Iraq; it's just the characters and their lives: a Civil Rights lawyer who can't help but pick up every lost cause for the underdog, a Mardi Gras Indian Chief who won't see his tradition go down, a late thirties radio DJ trying to find his voice, a Chef struggling with keeping her business afloat, a seasoned trombone player, a talented violinist, a struggling guitar player, the list goes on, and by no means am i able to do it justice with this meager and crappy rundown.

As usual with David Simon, the show makes little effort to sell you on it. It tells itself plain, never lending to flair, but always with a noticeable affection for the characters and the setting, and it always keeps you guessing where it'll go next. I just finished watching the series finale right now, and i just had to take a breath and work off that feeling you get when you see something you really like come to it's conclusion.

So i wrote this here post. I don't know if most of you guys even know the show, and it's not the formula that normally attracts anyone when you mention the concept, but it's one of the finest pieces of television i've ever seen.

I know what you did in the OOC thread K. You sketchy schemer. Cool

I liked The Wire and this show does sound interesting. But it looks to me like it has a realistic tone for which I haven't been in the mood for a while. I've been trying to immerse myself in fluffy stuff lately because real life is boring. I have no doubt that this series is good, but watching it would most probably send me in my dark place considering its subject, so I'll stick with my daily dosage of happiness for now. Razz
