Gripes of Wrath, Dragon Age Kazooie

Post by Rory on Fri Feb 13, 2015 3:11 am

And I just have this one thing I'm ticked off at. It's so major that I couldn't post a comment about it in the OOC thread without putting it into a spoiler, or in the OOC thread at all, because I wouldn't want to turn any of you off to reading it because of its length. I'm probably going to create an OT on Dragon Age Inquisition about what I liked and didn't like without spoilers. I just have to gripe about this.

Those damn collectibles. Maybe if they'd added context sensitive button prompts for climbing up rocky surfaces, I'd be a little less angry and feeling a little less pain in the finger I press to jump (I like to use spacebar to pause). And I don't like having to run all over to get the damn things, which you practically trip over until you find the skull and it says, "great, you found me now you get to find all those tiles on the ground". The ones in hard-to-reach places are the bane of this game's existence. I just spent 5 minutes trying to reach a skull and now it wants me to climb up some path that is so very subtle and attempts to do so are really just hit-and-miss. Do you want me to find the tile or not!? Because on one hand I can ignore it, and on the other hand I can't, I come back to trying on impulse and the stress is tearing me apart. My efforts to reach these climbable surfaces from the ocularum takes me through combat sometimes, and suddenly, to my disgrace, I realize the thought running through my mind is "oh great, more enemies to fight/flee from." To make matters worse, sometimes wolves, in the areas with wolves, will just come tearing across my path after a lone, fast-moving prey animal and either they notice me, or my companions get OCD on them. Doesn't matter which, because at some point they kill the animal and then come chasing after me, and you can't run away from wolves in this game. You could run through a camp of soldiers and they would follow you right through, not one of the soldiers thinking "what the hell are wolves doing here?" And not one of them lifting a finger to fight. I shouldn't want to avoid combat anyway! I came for the combat and the story. If I wanted collectibles, I'd be playing Banjo-Kazooie. And they do it right!

Not to mention the sheer amount of these things you need to find! How many are there in the Hinterlands? 22. each skull will only show you 4-6, so you need to find four-five skulls to find all of them. Besides that, there is another little sidequests that requires spending the shards to continue three different uh, parts. First, it's 6 shards for each. Then, 12. Then, 18! Contrary to what you may believe, I don't want this collectible shit to torment me through the entire game, it's taking away from all the good stuff.

There is mod community for this game on nexus forums. Sooner or later, someone's going to get rid of the headache. They have to. This is hell. Oh, and the quickbar is a crime against humanity.

Do you get any kind of benefit for collecting these things?

From collecting all shards in an area map, you gain Influence. That's like exp for your Inquisition. Leveling it up grants you a perk point, but there's no Inquisition "level". Perk points can be spent on perks. Some perks reduce war table progress time. Some increase effectiveness of some abilities in specific ways, like moving faster with Shield Wall. Still more net you extra exp from codex entries or grant you access to special dialogue where you would otherwise have to rely on whether a specific ally is present. Specifically, one perk you will want to get is Fine Tools, Deft Hands under the "Secrets" category of perks. Rogues can pick all locks except for those, Cunning no longer factors into it(it really should though). Influence is gained by completing quests.

That'll let you unlock doors you couldn't before. I haven't completed the special side quest attached to these collectible shards, but I'm assuming its just more Influence and gold. So far there's been no significance in scenes or dialogue about them, so I would assume it's just a collecting goal with no affect on the story. I have to finish it so that I know for sure, but I doubt I'd miss anything if I didn't.

Just feel like mentioning that when I replay DA:I I will not be 100%ing nor even 90%ing the game as a result of the sidequest-o-rama and the collectibles rampage.

Collecting those shards allow you to open doors in a special dungeon that gives you bonus stats when you empty them of enemy. Oh, some loot too. I didn't finish this dungeon, yet.

If you find this so maddening Rory, I suggest you stop collecting these shards. DA:I is like a buffet: just pick what you like.

I'm so glad I don't have the mentality of a hoarder and/or 100-percenter... DA:I would have made me crazier than usual.

And yeah, Zeiss is the awesome voice of reason here: Don't feel yourself forced to do something that you don't want in a game that allows you simply to skip it all. Sure, the doors have some cool loot and raise (very little) of your elemental resists, but at the end of the day, it's a little extra for people the people that feel good about collecting stuff. The reward is disproportional to the work, just leave it be.

I just personally think they implemented it wrong. 100%ing in an Assassin's Creed game is fun for me, despite there being no real benefit to it... the act of collecting itself was made enjoyable, jah? Then you have DA:I where the whole time it felt like an irritating slog... bleh.

To collect everything in Assassin's Creed always felt more boring to me; the best I can do is collect all the keys for the super armor.

But hey, we all have different tastes.

As one that can't for his life 100% in an Assassin's Creed game but did so in Castle in the Darkness recently, I'll attempt to say that it is all about personal tolerance with a game's and/or genre's components that makes 100% a thing they can do.

In fact, the only other game in the recent past that I have 100-percented is La freaking Mulana. I just love platformers, I guess.

Definitions vary. For me it's... all quests (marked and otherwise), Level 54ish (or in other words every skill at 100), get at LEAST one of every item, craft at least everything once, explore everything fully (not just visiting on the overworld to unlock fast travel but actually going through thoroughly), owning all houses fully decorated (easy qualification really, I do this normally), shut all 60 variations on Oblivion Gates (easily the most tedious thing for me personally), invest in all 98 stores, read all 109 Skill Books, reach 206 Fame, get all the Greater and Lesser Powers (a lot of these), get all 306 Ninroots 700ish Welkynd Stones, 50ish Varla Stones, all 410 Keys, all 147 regular books, and finally... kill all the Mud Crabs.

I managed to get all of one of the elemental bonuses to defense. Now to collect the others. 18+18+12+6, for...54. I really want those elemental bonuses. Yes I think someone should definitely find a way to eliminate that. It would be worth it if they saved you the trouble with a ng+. And why not? They did it with Mass Effect 1. But I guess not for all of their RPG titles. The defense bonuses are "worth it", but I'll save myself the trouble of a second time around, with console commands if I have to.

I really liked the achievements for Mass Effect 1. I wish more games did that. Outside of Chrono Trigger I never had so much fun with a New Game+.

Agree on NG+, as I've said many times. (one of the few things FFX-2 did correctly)

Persona 4 Golden also has a New Game Plus. You carry over your social stats and you money. Even though you still start at level 1, you also unlock a few game options that lets you gain EXP faster, or slower, can make combat tougher, or easier, and can get more money/loot from each combat.

Did I ever mention I love Persona 4? Because I do love Persona 4.

I can see why. That's some nice customization. I wonder if any games in the future will let you do that without having to mod or beat the game first?

One last thing, don't know if Arch had the same reaction in his playthrough. But I imagine it was similar.

*Asks Varric, "what's the deal with Orsino?"
Varric Slightly Disapproves

Did anyone else get flashbacks of the "refusal ending"? Oh no, I sure hope he doesn't leave my party! I don't think I could bear it. Let me guess, it was by artistic design? Could have retconned that whole thing as an fanciful part of Varric's homespun tale of the Champion. But "no no, we meant to do that, if anything it's your fault for not appreciating getting one more boss battle. Don't you like boss battles?"

To me, that's what it looked like:

Varric=Bioware

Orsino's choice to use blood magic made no sense to many players. They told Bioware this exact same thing.

Orsino's choice to use blood magic made no sense to the Inquisitor. He/she told Varric this exact same thing.

Varric slightly disapproves because he doesn't want to admit he kind screwed up that part of the story.

The writers at Bioware understand they screwed up that part of the story and let the players criticize it to let us know they realized their error. But like Varric, they can't change the story because it came out years ago. Why does Varric lose approval when you ask the question? I'm an optimist and I trust the Dragon Age team, so I interpret it as Bioware joking about writers who can't take criticism.

The Dragon Age team did so much to please their fans with this new game that I find it unlikely they would get back at the players this way. They could have just removed the line entirely from the game.

They most certainly could have done that, give us the wheel when it came to interpretation. The fact that it was part of a story told by Varric is the perfect setup for meeting halfway. I certainly hope there's a "yeah, I lied" approval freebie coming up, especially as far as I am now.
