Zeiss, Rory, and Higaide have had a nice long sleep after their odd adventures with mutant Olthoi, drunk Humans, and odd Aluvians.

Second Major action: I am going to meet the Mites to sell them the Leycite. Here’s what I want:

·       Money. Lots of money.

·       Access to the information network with no name.

I burn two uses of my Persuasion Orator ability and my non-combat action point. It would be fun if all of this could be done today.

That might take my third action, so just tell me if that happens.

Sort of waiting on Higaide and Rory but... yeah that will take more than 1 action... 3, in fact. The Mites are willing to stay up all night to discuss it if you are.

Well, I'll tell Van and a few key members of the Exchange where to find me if need be. I'll also have one of my employees (the one with the highest diplomacy) follow me around all day in case I need a messenger. The two ex-adventurers and Advoc will also come to serve as bodyguards.

I'm willing to negotiate with the Mites all night long if need be. Let's forget the ultimatum to Ursolan.

1st Action: Check on my Crew's morale and status. I don't really expect Jenna to have made a decision yet, but if she wants to talk to me, i'm available.

2nd Action: Check how Rory sent Kez that letter, and send her my reply (that i still have to type).

First action: Draft a guard rotation schedule with what are so far our best 'guards', spread across the rotations inconspicuously(but doing up to 2 non-adjacent rotations), filling in the rest of each rotation with other recruits as normal. Next, be present for guard training, participate a little, spend some time watching the Veil entrance with the first rotation, and then spend the rest of the First action as part of the second action.

Trail mix break(not my rations, heehee)

2nd action: Write to the Blackbrine contact in the Sho Empire.[NC AP]
Ask about their fleet. How many ships do they have? What are the dimensional measurements of their cargo space, and their weight limit? Drop Zeiss' name and try Diplomacy with discreet language, maybe we have a job for them. Something big. Request that they send someone to talk it out.

Return to the Veil and take a head count of all the refugees. Are you writing this down, me? Question for myself: rough estimate to determine how many trips it would take to move the refugees? I will outline the details of this math problem, and then hand it off to Zeiss or Higaide to solve.

Holding 3rd action.

Since the Mites don't have enough money to pay for the full value of the Leycite, I'll also ask for premium passports... which are going to be valid starting the moment they reopen the Hub. The kind of passports that would help for a business like the Exchange.

That's on top of the money and the no name network contact.

I also gave Rory the address to contact the Blackbrine.

From the Dereth Reference document wrote:The Hub is a complicated, magical, powerful system that allows people to teleport for a small fee to and fro from specific spots to specific spots. A standard trip, regardless of distance, is usually 2 gold per. A visa is required in most trans-country transports. Can transport one soul at a time and some small cargo, usually requiring extra fee for horses or beasts of burden.

Zeiss is dealing with a mountain of paperwork when Mevrak shows up, looking somewhat worse for wear. According to him he had hit the area Zeiss had sent him to, specifically, only to find it guarded by Aluvian military who caught him and roughed him up. Hesitantly, he admits to Zeiss that he told them he was working for the Exchange, but nothing else. Before Zeiss even has a chance to react to this news there is a knock at his door as one of his bodyguards informs him a messenger is here for him. The messenger in question is a rather nervous looking Drudge, who hesitantly approaches Zeiss' desk with the air of someone being sent to his death at the hands of a mafia boss. After a moment's more fumbling, he hands over a letter to Zeiss.

Jenna is actually quite excited, as she's heard wind of some rumors she's having checked out today by several of the Crew. Apparently there's a decent amount of money flowing from Glenden Wood to repair, refurbish, and build new infrastructure to help the influx of refugees and she believes that, if it's true, this would be a good place to start with helping to stabilize things here.

Rory mulls over his choices for guards for some time, noting that one of them is the drunkard Human he spotted last night. With the rotations set up, including care to ensure there are no blind spots, he spends some time observing training and successfully adding his Charisma to the scene with his presence, inspiring the trainees some. His trail mix contains almonds, dates, raisins, chocolate, pretzels, sesame seeds, cashews, peanuts, and walnuts. The whole thing has quite a bit of salt added.

EDITED:

Zeiss reads the letter. He then looks up to the messenger and says:

"You should use the Veil to escape this area. I will ask one of my employees who is mapping it to show you a way out."

After doing this, Zeiss burns the letter and informs some of his employees his decision to go see the Hub Mites immediately. Before he does, he takes Rory and Higaide to a corner and whispers:

Secret secret:

He then resumes his previous plan.

"Who told you this? How did you find out?"

At some point after Rory's questions are dealt with, he turns his thoughts toward avoiding the coup  and suggests that when they organize a contract with the Blackbrine to transport all willing human refugees on their fleet, they take that chance to move all of their most valuable assets in the Veil to transport as well, and join them for passage to Osteth.

"Ursolan told me. Through a letter. That's all I know."

As for Rory's plan, Zeiss glares at him for a moment.

"Flee? Flee? Like Bonebreaker and the rest? No. I'm staying. But feel free to do so when you get your share of the deal."

He leaves to meet the Mites.

Before he leaves, Zeiss goes to speak to the messenger and the two ex-adventurers.

"I changed my mind: you're not coming with me. You're going to Janwall and you'll bring back Radnaal of Highspring. You need to do this as fast as you can. Here."

He gives his employee a sealed letter and says to one of the two ex-adventurers:

"Protect him."

He then turns to the other and say:

"You'll protect another messenger."

Zeiss finds Mevrak and gives him two sealed letters.

"This is for Gretta of Firebeard. And Kolson, if you see him. Now go, and hurry."

THEN, Zeiss leaves to meet the Mites.

Third action: Announcement for the guards + Join 1 shift

Rory is a little surprised at the effect his presence had on patrol morale, and decides to join another shift, time permitting. But first, he will gather the guards to hear a rule. Guards on-duty and off-duty are not allowed to drink to inebriation. To be effective, we need to be alert, in a minute's notice if necessary, as it concerns guards who are off-duty.

In addition, every guard will get one day of the week off, decided at random and by rotation, and no more than 10 at a time. That doesn't mean off-duty guards can't join, but the rule is basically there to determine who's allowed to get drunk on a given day and who's not. In addition, guards cannot spend time outside the Veil in public while inebriated. Time with their families/friends doesn't count, as long as it's time spent in private and they have a not-drunk person who can escort them, which can be a family member(who can only go as far as the known entrance to the winding alleys that serve as the unofficial entrance to the Veil, which will probably get some kind of nickname).

Meeting + Announcement

#1
Rule: don't be drunk in public basically
Clause: can get drunk in public, but must have a sober family member/guardian or comrade-in-arms with them at all times when leaving the Veil.
Subclause: must be escorted back to the Veil by a sober family member/guardian or comrade-in-arms.
Violation of this clause results in the transgressor being confined to their quarters and alcohol confiscated(but not removed from ownership), and pay docked for the transgressor and anyone explicitly complicit in the violation, no higher than 20% for the inebriated and 10% for accomplice(s)(escorting or encouraging verbally or physically on a non-holiday), and not more than 5% for other accomplices. Cash is an alternative, provided the transgressors are confined to their quarters.

#2
Holiday: 1 random day of the week by rotation for up to 10 guards(pending GM input, depending on the number of guards we actually have leftover not assigned to any shifts for a given holiday) per week to serve as a 'holiday' day off(unofficially: 4-U-2-drunk).
Clause: guard or family member/guardian must escort them beyond the entrance from the Veil and escort them through public and in private at all times, and escort them back to the Veil 'entrance'.
Subclause: family members/guardians can assist or take over at any time.

Rory will write the rule stuff down on a paper, give a short announcement speech, and call up the guard who was drunk the previous night to come read it aloud for everyone. On Diplomacy fail, the guard will be confined to his/her quarters and Rory will read it aloud himself. If we haven't designated 'quarters' guards can be confined to, we'll do that now.

Rory will also have the same guard visit Zeiss before the end of the day to report what he remembers from the previous day, in case anything bad happened. Because of course we need to do this, and if the guard can't understand why, he/she better not give Rory any lip about it. Zeiss will know the guard is coming.

Finally, the shift
After all this, Rory will join that shift if there is time.

Zeiss, now aggravated and struggling to make himself properly diplomatic, heads to the Hub. The Mites initially just wave him away, saying the Hub is closed, and it takes several minutes for the Elf to get across the idea that he's there to bargain. From there it takes still more minutes to assure them he is not working on behalf of the government, which would be an automatic no for them. Finally getting across the overall concept, the first few things that needs to be hammered out include what the Exchange's goals are (for them to be given access to the Hub, they will have to prove they are worth it). Secondly, they will need to individually interview everyone who gets a pass, though this is mostly a formality. Thirdly, the Mites have no problem paying a large sum of cash for the Leycite, but every time Zeiss brings up the 'network', subtletly or overtly, the Mites he's talking to have no idea what he's talking about, which leads to a bit of an impasse on that point. These discussions will take quite some time, as previously mentioned.

Higaide, having scrawled down his letter and made the lengthy trip to the Commerce District to send it off north towards the Hive, with hope that it will reach Kezrinthka.

Rory, adjusting his plans a bit, gets some information from Zeiss and heads east by taxi to the Docks District, heading to a relatively normal looking area which only has a little bit of traffic and, by good fortune, the contact is actually there; Sesspira of Torinov, a tall Sclavi woman who acts as Quartermaster of the ship, the Proverbial Lemon. At the moment the Blackbrine are actually doing a large amount of business shipping smuggled goods between the Sho and Aluvia, something they're not overly inclined to discontinue, but they are at least willing to discuss a 'big deal' with the Exchange. Overall the Blackbrine have 4 frigate-sized sailing vessels and 1 Magitek trawler supertransport. The Frigates can carry quite a bit but they can't give you figures, however they do tell you that their supertransport can carry roughly 18,340 TEU's.

The Exchange's goals as an organization: take over what was once the Undermarket and change Aluvia's economy so that it doesn't require war to sustain itself.

As for the people who will get a passport, Zeiss is okay with leaving with the promise from the Mites that they will issue a certain number of passports so the interviews can be put off to later.

Zeiss will also drop the matter about the network with no name. If he meets a higher ranked Mite from the Hub, he will attempt to get the information, just in case.

Let's discuss money.

3rd Action: Travel to Janwall with the letter and give it to Radnaal. I'll answer whatever questions he may have, and tell him Zeiss was hoping he'd come back with me (i should phrase it like that - this is not a man that takes kindly to being told what to do, i'm sure).

Rory spends some very interesting time with his recruits. Firstly, the guard does not fumble his Diplomacy and does in fact recite the rules aloud for the group, with the appropriate level of haranguing. He seems nervous when told to go meet the crime boss, but goes without comment when ordered, which will be followed up on at the end of this post. Rory does have time to sit in on a shift if he so chooses, since sleep isn't much of an issue. The rigor of the guard schedule does surprise some of those present, since for most of them they're paid to hold a weapon and watch things... sometimes referred to as rent-a-guards as opposed to the real thing. But this will go towards them starting to think of themselves as a more professional force, at least one step in that direction.

Higaide starts off towards Janwall, and assuming he declines sleep for the night he'll be able to find Radnaal of Highspring. The GM will need a reminder on what was in the letter to continue this plot line, but continue it will, oh yes.

Zeiss, for his part, spends his entire evening in deep negotiations which are progressing incredibly slowly due to the unique way Mites perceive things. Each and every single point must be hammered out individually before they are willing to move on, which means the topic of how much cash they're willing to pay doesn't even come up tonight. At a point later in the evening, a lowly Exchange messenger arrives with a word from Rory stating Rory wants one of his (drunk) guards to approach 'the boss' and explain himself and what happened the previous night, which Zeiss may choose to do now or later at his discretion.

Zeiss shows himself to be very patient and not in the least irritated by the Mites' attitude.

As for the guard, Zeiss will ask Advoc to meet him, where he will listen to his report and advise him to follow Rory's commands. To avoid being distracted, Zeiss will cut his mind link with his Aspect for the short time they talk. Once this is done, Advoc will go back to his summoner's side.

Letter for Radnaal of Highspring:
Letter for Gretta of Firebeard/written in Dwarven:

Advoc will ask the messenger to tell the guards to prepare for the arrival of Radnaal and Gretta.

Talk some more with the Mites. Still being patient.
