March 18th Empty March 18th

Post by Archengeia Wed Apr 22, 2015 7:42 pm

A new day dawns... Javan and Kolson have made their way north, with an odd Half-Dwarf Half-Elf in tow who goes by the name of Eric of Anvilmar, who after some idle discussion Javan learns is already well on his way to becoming a Dragoon. The trio will arrive near the outskirts of where the Lefftenant supposedly is encamped in a few hours, and have a chance to plan their approach.

Meanwhile, elsewhere, Rory has reached a conclusion about the drunk guard and his incident. Higaide has returned to Holtburg and discovered that his little 'help people' organization has reached the decision that they are going to leave the Holtburg area and head west to Glenden Wood, to assist those suffering near the front lines, where they can do the most good. And Zeiss has finally reached a conclusion of his nearly 2 and a half day solid negotiations with the Mites. In summary; the Mites have no organization and as such decided that, rather than negotiate for it being theirs, they are going to hand it over to the Osteth Republic, who is prepared to pay a total of 30 Platinum for the Leycite, in addition to granting full private access to the Hub for each individual Zeiss specifically selects for the rest of their natural lives (note: such access is granted to those individuals' belongings, but not other people they wish to bring with them. The Mite you talked with was adamant on this point and would not budge no matter how many CHA rolls tossed at him). At various points in the discussion Zeiss tried to bring up the information network but no one he spoke to seemed to have any idea what he was talking about, including the Osteth Mite and Lugian who traveled here to finalize the deal. The ink is not yet laid if Zeiss still wishes to bargain.

Zeiss will accept the deal under these two conditions:

  • Have 5 pieces of platinum turned into gold instead. We need some change.
  • The unlimited access to the Hub must extend to any new Hub the Mites may build in the future. You know, just in case they can do that. I'm sure they can figure it out.

If that doesn't take much time, could they tell me for how much the Osteth government would pay for the Leycite without the access to the Hub? I'm assuming we discussed this possibility in these past two days.

The Republic is not exactly cash flush right now, and after some discussions (that already occurred) you realize that they're already technically offering more than they can afford, Hub or no, at least in terms of raw cash. They are willing to think about lowering that number a bit if Zeiss wants other concessions from the Republic.

Okay. We'll accept the previous deal if the two conditions I laid out are accepted.

Is there any defensible terrain we can hide our force in while we send out the scouts to find the camp and confirm it's there? Any other info they could bring would also be helpful, such as force numbers and defenses.

If so, we'll stop there for now, post a watch, and send out the scouts to do just that.

The local terrain is lots of trees and woodlands, though no thick forests. Any approach will likely be watched, but one could easily try and send someone skilled at stealth to scout things out. A small rock outcropping near one of the small hills will service to hide your tiny band in the interim while sending said scout out... the only question is whom to send.

Depends, was I able to get those scouts I wanted? If so send both of them out to do it. I can't speak for Javan but Kolson is only as sneaky as the average person, which is not very. :p

First action: Martial Training
Rory will first see to it that the token thief has been given his special assignment, then train the guards, as is routine.

Second action: Guard Inquiry among the guards
Rory will work in tandem with the sergeants to approach each patrol and post, and then to people off-duty, for a report with specific inquiry. Before this, though, they will have the guards on holiday for the day come see them before martial training for this same report.

Rory makes a mental note on adding a policy for on-duty patrols to file reports on anything irregular during their shifts daily.

Third action: Write a Letter
If there's time, Rory will write a letter and see if he can hand it off to an Olthoi(required) to be mailed.
OOC: Contents of message pending writing.

for easy reference:

That's unfortunate. Are you willing to hear me out on why I think you should change your mind or would you prefer to move on? I'll defer to your judgement.

Thank you. (Kolson takes pizza orders from the GM and the other players before calling the order in and asks if anyone wants any specific kinds of drinks or additional snacks when he stops at a convenience store on the way to getting the pies.)

We've been playing together for a while now and I think you have a pretty good feel for how I like to play. Stop me if you disagree on any of this.

1. I have a pretty good idea of the mechanical strengths and weaknesses (as I see them of course) of both my own character and the other characters in my group.

2. That while I'm prone to occasional bouts of bold action, that I'm a cautious commander at heart, preferring to have a plan that minimizes casualties to my own side, an escape route, and as much information as possible within whatever I define as an acceptable time frame before making a decision.

3. That I would use my own knowledge of the rules, written and unwritten, to make a last minute gambit in my favor.

Therefore, I put forth that had we talked out forming my troop like we would have in a real life game, that me leaving without at least one scout who knew what he was doing was so unlikely that it verges on impossible.

Further, if I really couldn't recruit a follower of sufficient skill in any town on my way south, I would have asked about using my Leadership feat to attract a cohort with said skills instead. While you still could have said no, I would have at least made the plea so I believe this to be a valid point.

Thank you for hearing me out.

Y'know I kind of miss the socialized snacking that came with D&Ding in person. I know, weird thing to miss, but food is always best when shared. Anyways.

I don't want to come across as a pushover GM who gives his players whatever they want, but I do agree that if we weren't sort of lurching forward in a vain attempt to catch up to the other campaign that it's very likely we would have sat down and figured out the hiring of some peoples specifically for your mission for the Rider, and it's very likely ONE of those would have included a Scout. I'll also say you have (after a dice roll) 4 other people of your choice at your disposal, all minions/cohorts.

You are not alone in that. That kind of comradery is one of the things I love about live play.

And thank you. Am I correct in saying that all of them can have heroic levels (non-NPC classes) or would it just be my cohort and say second-in-command? Either way, I'll want two frontliners to help Javan, 1 archer, 1 skirmisher (can fight in melee or ranged well and moves around a lot and is probably my scout), and a dedicated healer, hopefully a white mage.

Okay. How about a paladin or ranger for healing spells? Is there a nonmagic option? Are any mages a possibility?

Sounds good so lets do this. Let's make that last person another melee warrior and make him or her the medic. If I can give another person a minor in medical training I'll do that as well.

Finally I'll send out the scout to take a look while we hole up in that small rock outcropping you mentioned. Here's hoping that scout doesn't massively tank their stealth checks, lol.

A good hour passes before the scout returns. She's fairly certain she didn't get seen en route, though there were a few tense moments so she took a long route back, just to be safe. If she was tailed there will probably be company soon.

Her report is brief; the 'enemy' camp is not fortified, at all... in fact it's brilliantly designed to blend with the scenery so well that she almost didn't spot it at first and nearly stumbled into it trying to find it. There are make-shift tents out of canopies of trees, tunnels and inlets dug into hills, and so on. Those there did not seem overly well armed, but there were a lot of them... at least 30 strong by her count. No one struck her as a leader type, no one flaunting or wearing more or less than anyone else present. She does recommend that if you aim for a military strike to approach from the west (the opposite side of where you are now), as due to the angle of the hills and trees it's less likely to be spotted, giving an attack a little more surprise time.

OOC:

Find the cheapest ring that allows me to get a full rest like Rory. I am willing to sell my bottle of golden Rum (the Lugian stuff) and my "magically Woven bedroll that can raise or lower temperatures."

Ask Van to find potential large groups of mercenaries to hire who are ready to fight as soon as they join us. If our budget allows it, I would prefer that we keep them as the Exchange military force. Just in case we don't have enough money, let's find smaller units of mercenaries available to hire too.

Check if the messenger and the two ex-adventurers I sent to meet Gretta of Firebeard have returned.

Go to sleep (the amount of time I'm asleep will depend on the cost of the ring).

Do a quick inspection of the Exchange's activities. How much time before the Middle-managers are fully operational?

Take one of the horse Rory brought with us from the Sho Empire and leave in a hurry for Janwall to convince an old bitter man not to turn his back on the world.

While he is still full control of his mental faculties, Advoc will help coordinate the Exchange.

Meanwhile, in Holtburg...

Zeiss manages to find a ring similar to Rory's but worse in every way. It basically chops his required rest time to 5 hours instead of 8, and it costs him a pretty pickle; a full 200 gold.

Van will do his best looking into mercenaries, but warns that he's about 99% likely to fail given that everyone who can even lift a weapon is currently being hired as a 'mercenary' for the Aluvian military. He'll do his best, but he mentions that he'd be more likely to succeed if there was a way to hire mercs outside of Aluvia who then could get into Aluvia without issue.

The Gretta envoy has not yet arrived. As an aside the GM decided not to make Gretta the female dwarf that's been in the live campaign the last few sessions even though it'd be funny.

The middle managers are doing their best with what they have but are still fumbling a bit. It'll be a few more days until they're acceptably at the newbie level of management.

Zeiss then settles in for a 5 hour nap assuming he bought the ring before trying to get a high level Dragoon on his side.

OOC:

Bought the ring.

Rory found a Blackbrine contact in Holtburg. I will tell Van to check up with them to see if we could get mercenaries this way. We're looking for people who have a professional attitude (if not the extensive background) and who is ready to risk it all. I don't care what race they are.

I sleep then leave for Janwall with the horse at full speed.

Advoc will help the middle managers by coordinating between them. He will stop doing so before his faculties degrade and find a place to sit. Guarding front of my office would be good.

Zeiss taps 3 red Mana to summon Blackbrine Bandits... er, ahem. Zeiss utilizes the contacts the party has to try and find some mercenaries, but he realizes that getting and hiring them is the easy part. Getting them into Holtburg will be the difficult part. Then he zooms off to Radnaal, though based on the timing of all his actions he will not arrive until early morning tomorrow.
