This thread is to consolidate and record the party's questions concerning Aluvian Politics, History, and Related Topics. While anyone is free to ask a question and get an answer, please use the Analysis Thread for interpretations and commentary.

Aluvia prior to the Dryreach Incident was a loose alliance of wealthy magnates and patrons who used their influence and resources to maintain a nonstop balancing act between them in a political game of... fancy chairs.  In this old system the military was entirely cell-based, with each cell being structured around a given wealthy individual, family, or group.  Usually this was at the city level, rarely it would go higher.  This military was poorly structured, trained, and equipped... for there was no real need for a military in the modern world.  War wasn't even in the vocabulary until it was introduced after the Dryreach Incident by the Dericost.  

The High Queen, woman chosen to the Monarch and one of the only surviving members from the 'before times' aka Year 0.  The High Queen, Alysa of Highspring (a Lord Elf) retained sovereign power over the entire Kingdom and was very active in the day to day management of the bureaucracy, and created the Lords and the Council to help her manage the affairs of such a vast territory.  The Council consisted of people with the wealth to buy their way in, a move Alysa herself calculated to ensure that people with resources and influence would be in the upper hierarchy and, since anyone could buy their way in, would be invested in maintaining that position through the only method ratified; by her personal approval.  With this threat constantly over the Council's heads, they walked a fine line of being happy with where they were and terrified of losing their position.   With the Lords she took a different route; the Lords were people of no standing, wealth, or influence... but were hand chosen by her own personal agents and then selected by her, herself, for one distinguished trait; intellect.  She wanted leaders.  Leaders with charisma, intellect, tactical know-how, and strategic capacity.  The only ones with the power to remove or replace Lords were her and the Council, and as a result there has been only 1 occasion of a Lord's family member ascending to the position after their removal (and even then it was only because the child in question was simply that brilliant).

All of this went to hell after the Incident.  The Aristocracy (which I use to refer to the wealthy upper class in general, since there are no true lines of nobility) and the Council found themselves in the same boat; facing a foe they had no capacity to deal with.  It was several months before the Dericost even shared a name for their enemy; Tumerok.  Thus in those first few months a nameless fear which could not be stopped had crushed them and their fellow nations like bugs.  Money and resources could not combat the Tumerok or that which they created; fear.  Alysa probably had a plan of action in mind, but she never got a chance to implement it as the Lords stepped in, being the types of individuals they were.  The Lords completely redid half the government of Aluvia, turning the cell-based decentralized city-states into a cohesive force which effectively became run by the Lords themselves.  The Council was allowed to maintain their position, but lost all of their actual political power, being reduced to managers and bureaucrats.  The High Queen was allowed to retain sovereignty in name only, losing every ounce of her political influence and control.  And the Lords became the Supreme Commanders of the other major thing that was reshaped... the military.

In the face of a total unknown such as the Tumerok, the Lords reasoned that they needed manpower, training, and technology.  The alliance with the Republic was fully the idea of the Lords, as was devoting a colossal portion of all national resources to such a completely overhaul of the military that comparing the two is like comparing a single ant to an army of Tuskers.  When the geniuses in the Republic devised the Airship and its military-grade equivalents, dozens were commissioned in the first few years alone.  And given how well military service paid in benefits (though not in actual pay), a fairly large number of volunteers signed up not just to be well dressed mercenaries, but career soldiers.

All of this left the Lords the unquestioned rulers of Aluvia.  All of the Lords who were in power during this transformation remain in power today (not counting the Lady Lightmane) except for Aayndia of Floralwind, a Half-Banderling who was a brilliant tactician placed in command of the newly formed Lytlethorpe Region as part of the joint effort of the Four Nations to create a military barrier along the boundaries of the Dryreach Zone.  

With the Lords at the top and the Council dealing with large-scale bureaucracy, all internal and external policing was dealt with by the newly revamped military.  Thus military officials in the officer track would often serve as constables, judges, jury, investigators, and the like.  This isn't too dissimilar from how things worked before, as the cell militias and soldiers under the Aristocracy handled things in fairly the same fashion, but it was far better organized now.

Under these upper echelons things branch a bit.  The military is often considered a singular unit when it comes to factions, but in truth the military is effectively five separate organizations which coordinate with one another, each one reporting to their respective Lord.  The Lords themselves do have an informal and off-the-paperwork council among themselves, being the actual rulers of Aluvia.  

The Aristocracy retains an unusual position in the power structure.  Borrowing from Alysa's ideas from a century ago, public positions are allowed to be purchased into, resulting in a similar situation to how the Council used to work.  This means most of the mayors, secretaries, and otherwise bureaucracy is consistent of the wealthy or formerly wealthy members of the Aristocracy.  More than once in the last 30 years there have been disorganized attempts by the wealthy to take more political power, but the military tends to keep such things in check... and add to that the fact that the whole of the Aristocracy is not a faction in any sense of the word, as any alliances tend to be small in scope and usually temporary.  Thus there is no true group of the Aristocracy, merely a designation.  As a side effect, there are actually very strict laws in place in Aluvia regarding ownership of weapons and armor.  Anything up to Steel is completely unrestricted.  Going slightly above that in magical or material quality requires a license, which is tantamount to registration with the military so they know where you are and what you use.  (Side note: One of the recruitment pitches the Adventurer's Guild used back when it was still active in this time was that they would handle such hassles for you, which some found to be a benefit).  Anything from a certain quality and higher is flat forbidden for non military personnel in Aluvia.

The Undermarket has always slipped into the cracks of this.  The Lords tolerated the Undermarket because they weren't stupid and understood how critical it was to the substructure of the economy, so allowing them some leniency was acceptable.

1. What is the Queen's reputation among the common folk?
Queen Alysa in the modern era has two reputations; one from those who remember when she was an active figure in the Kingdom, prior to the Incident, and those who are of the modern generations. It's been a little over 30 years since she's faded from all public view, after all, so most people aren't even fully aware there is a Queen or know anything about her. As for those who've been alive that long, they remember Alysa as an extremely intelligent, driven individual with a powerful mind and keen intellect. There are whispers that she was a mage of some type, too, though the stories are conflicting.

2. Is it possible to meet her and if so what is the protocol?
The High Queen does not make actual appearances anymore but if one were to pull the right strings and either sneak in, bribe in, or arrange a favor from someone in power... meeting her could be feasible. There is no current protocol for simply scheduling a meeting.

3. Who would I talk to if I wanted to know what she is like? I mean, does she have any well known friends or former associates?
All the current Lords have at least met the woman, each one being personally appointed by her. Otherwise one would have to find one of the older-lived military officials who were around during her reign, such as Radnaal of Highspring.

On the Lords

1. Who are the Lords and former Lords specifically? Where do they live and what are their reputations?
*ahem.*
Fahran of Silentblade, a progressive Elf who is very well liked by his military and the people in the Province of Glenden Wood, where he reigns. He is personable, appears in public constantly, and makes it a point to be easy to access by the residents of Glenden Wood.
Dorin of Songblade, an ex-military Brigadier and a Dwarf, and a known Dragoon. He still actively campaigns against monsters and beasts on the outskirts of the Cragstone Province, and has his own personal Frigate-class Airship.
Raene of Shadowforge, a Dwarven woman who was an explorer and adventurer, being personally responsible for helping to stretch the boundaries closer to the Dires in the area that would eventually be Colier. She also famously survived a battle with a Golem, though tales vary as to which type of Golem.
Aayndia of Floralwind, a Half-Banderling Dragoon woman who was the actual High General of the revamped Aluvian military for her years of exceptional leadership skill and charisma. She is exceptionally well liked, and was a natural choice to be elevated by the Lords' council to join their ranks for the newly-formed Lytlethorpe Province.


2. Assuming this is public knowledge, what aspects of the military do they each currently control? In the case of Lightmane what did she use to control?
The military is, effectively, five militaries. While they coordinate with each other, a lot, ultimately each chain of command leads up to and terminates at their given Lord. Thus all assets in a given Province are under the ultimate direct control of the given Lord.

3. How do the Lords make money and support their families and dependents?
All of the Lords receive a salary the equivalent of a General in the army, but most use that to invest in or produce their own companies on the side. The Lady Lightmane herself had a well-established financial stake in a transport system that does regular supertransport magitek trawler trade with the coastal cities of Osteth.

On the Aristocracy

1. When people talk about powerful aristocrats, what are the top 5 names that people mention the most?
Fairn of Feathermoon, an Elven gentleman who runs Country Rider.
Tarin of Dragonmaw, an Orc who runs Archon Transport Systems.
Gaeria of Warsong, an Orc woman who is the leader of the Dragonkin Sworn and a known Dragoon.
Alonzo of Firebeard, a Half-Dwarf and retired assassin who runs the Bloodied Flock.
Cyndra of Sunreaver, a very public figure of a Lord Elf woman who holds the largest 'share' of the PTC and likes to entertain others of the upper class on a regular basis.

2. What are they like and how do they make their money?
The money question was answered above really. Fairn is a somewhat well-known figure, being out in the open fairly frequently, though not in a social fashion as he actively runs the Rider and usually coordinates things personally. Tarin is known for being reclusive and very obsessive about his bureaucracy and accounting, running most of the books of ATS by himself. Gaeria is an opportunist and investor who started the Dragonkin Sworn to capitalize on the dwindling Adventurer market years before the Guild itself started to collapse. She's also arguably the most skilled Dragoon on the continent, and has no problem fighting alongside her mercenaries. Alonzo is known for being exceptionally creepy, to the point where most people don't like being in his presence, and makes it a point to hand out top tier contracts personally. Cyndra is an exceptionally public figure who likes to hold social gatherings weekly or bi-weekly to network and trade information and favors, and on occasion sets up fêtes to entertain the common folk.

Benefits actually vary based on position but generally those who are in Danger Close situations. Full benefits include full medical (mundane and magical), coverage for moving expenses, and an allotment for living expenses for immediate family. Partial benefits are all of the above to a lesser extent. The military itself administers these benefits, as the military tends to control most of the hospitals and almost 99% of all White Mages in the Kingdom (as all White Mages are registered).

2. Where does the queen currently reside?
Her current residency is not publicly known.

On the Lords

1. What is each Lord's military doctrine?
Superior tactics, superior training, superior equipment, superior numbers. All the Lords agree on this basic concept, and it's one of the reasons that all Aluvian military units regularly train in the field against monsters. There's been an agreement with the Republic for a very long time for them to practice honing their skills on the nightmares in the Osteth, and they regularly stage faux battles amongst each other to keep their anti-personnel tactics keen. Being shoved out of the military for failing to keep up is not uncommon (and probably lead to so many of the drop outs who joined groups like the IGA).

2. Did Lightmane have any family in town?
The Lady Lightmane did have a sister she was fond of from a different father, a Half-Ogre who pursued a career in the Dragonkin Sworn. She no longer lives in Holtburg though.

3. Did she maintain an official residence outside of the Royal District? If so, where?
No.

4. Have any of the Lords taken the lead in the war or are they leaving the battlefield to subordinates while they handle logistics?
... as far as you're aware the Lords are directly leading the war effort.

5. Where is Lightmane's supertransport magitek trawler based out of?
Holtburg.

6. What's the tonnage on a supertransport magitek trawler?
230,000 GT

7. Does each Lord take care of their own logistics and do they compete for supplies and equipment?
Each Lord is responsible for the logistics of their military. There is no known competition for supplies and equipment.

8. What companies and commercial concerns are the primary suppliers of the various Lords?
The only two companies that the Lords employ for military concerns are Xelios Drive Yards and Praxis Industrial.

On the Aristocracy

1. Where does Cyndra of Sunreaver live?
She has multiple homes across the Kingdom, though since the tensions after the Earth Ley Line exploded she's been remaining in her secluded mansion located in the Deepoak area.

2. Does she have any well known loves or appetites? Example wines, fancy foods, collects art, keeps her own Kronk equivalent, etc.
She is well known for enjoying Olthoi delicacies and anything from countries that are not Aluvia. She has her own private mercenaries who function as defense for her, her guests, and her various houses. She also has a strong fondness for emeralds.

2. Would it be too far out of line to suppose that the Lords pay a stipend to Queen Alysa for her day to day expenses?

On the Lords

1. As a followup to the question of military doctrine what regions of Aluvia does each Lord draw the bulk of recruits from? Racial and cultural groups per faction would be appreciated.

2. Do each of the Lords draw from the same play book when it comes to military emphasis? For example, you mentioned that Dorin of Songblade
has his own personal frigate, so does that mean he prefers air ships in his battle plans?

3. Tying question 1 and 2 together does the cultural and racial makeup of their forces also give them a kind of specialization or emphasis when it comes to organization and equipment? If so, what is it?

4. Who are the CEO's of Xelios Drive Yards (Nice Star Wars reference) and Praxis Industrial? Do the Lords themselves make up the board of directors? What can you tell me about the history of these companies? Is it safe to assume their corporate HQs are here in Holtburg? How about their factories?

On the Aristocracy

1. Gaeria of Warsong sounds like a dangerous woman. Is her office here in Holtburg or do the Dragonkin Sworn HQ somewhere else?

2. I guess this next one is complicated since I'm asking both of you, but what can Zeiss tell me about Alonzo of Firebeard?

-What is he like in your opinion? How did he make you feel when he was around?

-Did you ever see him outside of a job briefing? If so, tell me about it.

-Does he care about the members of the Bloodied Flock? How so and to what extent?

-Did you ever test his skills? If so how good is he compared to other assassins you worked with?

-What kinds of stories are told about him and his past work?

-Any general scuttlebutt you think you can share?

I don't know much about Alonzo the character, but maybe Zeiss does. What I do know is that the Bloodied Flock offers illegal assassinations services and the assassins who take care of those are expected to succeed or die trying. I imagine suicide is expected of these assassins if they fail.

Sure, but that's the job. I'm trying to get more insight into what he thinks of his people or if he considers them his people at all. I suspect he's more like Roose Bolton than Ezio but I'd like to confirm it without having to meet him.

Interestingly given the fairly recent resurgence of the military, there's been next to no retirements thusfar. In theory what type of benefits they might gain depends solely on their standing, record, age, how they retire, that sort of thing.

2. Would it be too far out of line to suppose that the Lords pay a stipend to Queen Alysa for her day to day expenses?
Queen Alysa manages her own finances, though no one's entirely sure how.

On the Lords

1. As a followup to the question of military doctrine what regions of Aluvia does each Lord draw the bulk of recruits from? Racial and cultural groups per faction would be appreciated.
It'd be best to describe the recruitment as a radius, with higher concentrations of recruitment from closer to the Major City and decreasing the further out one gets. Under the Lords it's been emphasized that there is no racism involved, which resulted in some pretty severe punishments in the earlier days as some of the old guard were still pro-Dwarven (who had the majority of the old 'career' militia positions prior to the Incident). In general though the recruitment ads target the young and the able, either mentally or physically, and they tend to peruse schools regularly.

2. Do each of the Lords draw from the same play book when it comes to military emphasis? For example, you mentioned that Dorin of Songblade has his own personal frigate, so does that mean he prefers air ships in his battle plans?
Each Lord has their own particular method of strategy. The only one I mentioned was Lord Dorin of Songblade because he's the only one who's tactics are commonly known; he has a huge emphasis on mobility and flexibility in battle plans, which airships feature nicely into. There are rumors he's leading a squadron of military-grade Frigate-class airships down to the front lines even now.

3. Tying question 1 and 2 together does the cultural and racial makeup of their forces also give them a kind of specialization or emphasis when it comes to organization and equipment? If so, what is it?

XDY is run by Kreia of Sandstone, a Lugian woman and renowned Weaver. She tends to maintain her offices in the city of Lin, in the Osteth.
Praxis Industrial is headed up by Akkrilkxus of Worker, and she tends to maintain her main office in Eldrytch.
The Lords do not stand as any board of directors for any companies that I'm aware of.
History... *rubs eyes* XDY was founded by Kreia of Sandstone just under 30 years ago in direct response to the discovery of the airship, and is dedicated wholly and solely towards the production of airships. XDY is effectively the only airship manufacturer on the continent, having produced all but 3 military-grade airships that are in service (the Bahamut, the Leviathan, and the Alexander). They tend to only accept 'big' jobs, and so relatively ignored the civilian market which allowed a few other much smaller companies to start producing ships for civilian purposes. There are rumors these smaller manufactories are actually subsidiaries of XDY.
Praxis Industrial has been around for about 2 centuries, and back before more modern mundane technologies started entering into common use was responsible for producing items in virtually all aspects of life. As more mundane Weaving and crafting started becoming more popular, an up and coming company called the Provincial Trading Company started eating up the 'common' market, and Praxis restructured to start aiming for more higher tier, more expensive, or more elaborate jobs. In the modern era, virtually all the master archweavers in the world work for Praxis.
Both companies have production lines fairly widespread, with XDY's primary areas being in Lin, Linvak Tukal, and Glenden Wood. Praxis' primary areas are Cragstone, Tou, Qal, Holtburg, and Rithwic.



On the Aristocracy

1. Gaeria of Warsong sounds like a dangerous woman. Is her office here in Holtburg or do the Dragonkin Sworn HQ somewhere else?
The Dragonkin Sworn are based in Rithwic.

2. I guess this next one is complicated since I'm asking both of you, but what can Zeiss tell me about Alonzo of Firebeard?

-What is he like in your opinion? How did he make you feel when he was around?
Most people state that they do not enjoy his company and prefer to not be around him, claiming he is morbid and lacks basic social graces.

-Did you ever see him outside of a job briefing? If so, tell me about it.
He has performed a few high level assassinations himself. Legally, of course. In all of the known cases he was never detected until the target was dead.

-Does he care about the members of the Bloodied Flock? How so and to what extent?
Debatable. They do bring him money, after all.

-Did you ever test his skills? If so how good is he compared to other assassins you worked with?
As previously indicated, he's probably the single best assassin in the known world.

-What kinds of stories are told about him and his past work?
Alonzo was working as an assassin in the old Blood Brothers group, which was the previous assassination group that was illegal for the most part and a general mess in its usage. Alonzo personally killed the group's entire upper leadership and approached the High Queen, the Emperor, and the Council (though not the Taitus) with the at-the-time radical idea of 'legal assassinations' to ensure things would be far more tidy, arguing that they'd happen with or without legal ratification.

-Any general scuttlebutt you think you can share?
He's higher level than you, which is rare at this point in time.

Interestingly given the fairly recent resurgence of the military, there's been next to no retirements thusfar. In theory what type of benefits they might gain depends solely on their standing, record, age, how they retire, that sort of thing.

Letting her have her own finances at all seems like a huge tactical slip up to me. Very sloppy. Unless she cut a deal for the future of Aluvia. Go quietly and don't contest it in exchange for largely being left alone. But then what does she do with that privacy?

I want to meet her now more than ever before.

1. As a followup on the radius question, what are the populations of each Lord's Major City then? What is the racial makeup and what cultures do they come from? What rivalries, economic or military, traditionally exist between these groups?

2. Given my background as a college trained Red Mage would I have not had access to the strategies and tactics of a 20-year-plus conflict? It seems highly improbable that this wouldn't be available to tomorrow's officers and generals. So what were the Lord's tactics back then and what are some of their famous battles and accomplishments? If I don't know, where would I go to find out?

Would Holtburg U. have any tomes or treatises on the subject?

3. Did the Lord's establish a school for training officers? If so, where is it and what is it called? Could my academic contacts get me in for a visit?

4. Who is the foremost military historian in Aluvia? Where do they live?

Each Province handles their own affairs with regards to bureaucracy, logistics, etc.

On average each Major City houses the same population spread; about 30% Elves, 40% Dwarves, 10% Lord Elves, and 18% Half-Elves. The remaining 2% includes Gnomes, Mites, Halflings, Olthoi, Lugians, Drudges, and the like. Of course these numbers were before the Stoneholders showed up.
A deliberate policy was implemented during the formation of Aluvia about a century ago as a result of the Dericost Accords to erase all previous cultural and tribal bias that the numerous city-states and cities had, resulting in a deliberate and sometimes brutal homogenization of the people and an instilling within them of national pride in the Kingdom. In an effort to aid in this matter, new cultural biases were invented to allow people to retain rivalries while keeping them under control in a fashion that was believed to be suitable towards the Kingdom's progress as a whole. These include the Dwarves having a sense of being the 'heavy lifters' of the Kingdom in terms of workers and fighters, though this isn't true in practice; Lord Elves being superior to Elves and vice versa, though this is also not true in practice; and the Half-Elves being seen as an overall good thing for cultural and genetic diversity. Thus Dwarves tend to be a bit harsh to non-Dwarves, Lord Elves and Elves have issues getting along, and Half-Elves are usually given preferential treatment and their births are highly celebrated, especially amongst the wealthy and powerful.

Standard tactics are of course available to just about anyone with martial training in the last decade or so, but sadly Kolson doesn't recall having actually read up much on the specific strategies the Lords employ other than the aforementioned. General tactics include proficiency with a wide variety of martial and ranged weapons, cell-based platoon deployment which coordinate via sounds, banners, or Woven devices rather than large swarms of units, and an emphasis on squad specialization rather than diversity.

3. Did the Lord's establish a school for training officers? If so, where is it and what is it called? Could my academic contacts get me in for a visit?
There are about 8 Officers schools across Aluvia, which guarantee military service if you successfully pass Section. It would be fairly easy to visit any of the aforementioned schools even without contacts, and there is one such school in the Holtburg Province; Iroloft Academy, which is situated in Winterness, southwest of Holtburg and along the railway.

4. Who is the foremost military historian in Aluvia? Where do they live?
While there are quite a few historians in the vast Kingdom, the only one who's really made a name for herself is Marleth of Thunderbeard, a Dwarven woman who's been doing a series of journals on the military development of Aluvia since the Dryreach Incident. She lives in Holtburg proper, in the Commons District, though she has an office where she publishes and distributes the Aluvian Treatise of Warfare about once per month.
