Well to get things rolling I was thinking of making a Cursed black mage from the Free Feathers named Steve. Being Cursed is the result of some childhood trauma that manifests as a wild magic type effect where a random outcome could happen instead of the spell I cast. While that sounds fun to me, the rest of you also have to play with that character so I'm hoping you guys don't have a problem with an ally who might occasionally and randomly hinder our efforts with his condition.

I hope that means your abilities/stats compensate for that. How do you want to handle rolling for ability scores?

He gets the Power Investure feat free of charge basically, but he will have to wait a few levels before he can use it since he has to learn how to keep his magic under control. The feat was created by Arch.

Power Investure:
Power Investure is a new feat for any magically inclined class. Requires the ability to cast Medium spells or a Spellcraft of 11. It adds an additional amount of Mana gained per level, non-retroactive, depending on the class taken. Black Mages gain 10 additional Mana per level. White, Red, and Yellow Mages gain 8 additional Mana per level. Druids and Paladins gain 3 additional Mana per level. Rangers gain 2 additional Mana per level. Green Mages gain 1 additional Green Mana per level.

He will get it sooner than what the rules say, but I will decide when.

As for ability scores, I like the "Distribute these: 13/14/15/16/17/18" method, but you can roll for it if you prefer. For one ability score, you roll 5d6, you keep the three highest results and you add them up. 1s are changed to 6s.

You repeat five times.

My character is going to be a Blessed Red Mage, and my affinity will be the Spacial element. I assume same level progression but swapping White spells with Yellow?

I'm going to start with Scan and Fire.

I went Ironman for my rolls. FYI, I decided on my class after the fact.

+3 16 Strength
+1 12 Dexterity
+2 15 Constitution
+4 18 Intelligence
+3 16 Wisdom
+2 14 Charisma

What are you doing for languages?

So... not that I currently have time for this, but I'd like to tentatively put out the idea of playing an ex-con Rogue who is currently serving 'time' in the Coins.

@Rory  Languages. Yeah, sorry. Each nation speaks a specific language.

The Free Feathers: Imperial
The Lofell Republic: Lofellian
The Emerald Kingdom: Chromium
The Lorinth Kingdom: Harmonie
Myr: Wytrwaly

Other languages

Found in the Enclave: Mishmash (which is an amalgam of all the nations' languages).
Used by the practicing Stoics: Stoikotita (originated from a culture which disappeared because of the Flood; it isn't used much anymore).

Imperial is the common language in the Archipelago and almost everyone speaks it. Your characters certainly do. You also gain an additional language for where your character was raised, and you can choose another language for each INT modifier you have.

@Archengeia  Sure. You would only need to make sure your character was convicted for a minor crime (theft, fraud, smuggling) or give me a good reason why he was sent to the Coins for anything more serious, such as a contact who owed you a favor decided to "lower" your sentence, or maybe one of your colleagues used your savings to bribe certain officials, etc.

As an aside for mages, here's another idea as to why they might have joined the Coins: to pay for their tuition fees. Not everyone comes from a wealthy family, and the Coins have partnered up with several Academies just for this purpose: they pay for everything you need, and you work for them for X amount of time until your debt is cleared. The most common contract is three years, unless the Coins also paid for your board and lodging; in this case, it would raise to 5 years.

The mage mercenaries often use the loot they gain from their missions to reduce their time.

@Zeiss: I'm torn now. My original concept was...
For Zeiss Only:
...a gentleman who was actually completely innocent of crime, but was present during an altercation and was implicated along with whomever did the actual crimes present and was tried and convicted regardless of proof, either thanks to corruption or an uncaring system or whatever.

But now I'm not sure.

You not play a good guy? Is that even possible???

In all seriousness though why not try a neutral guy for once? Focus on personal goals and helping out your family. It's okay to care about your community but a neutral character isn't going to ask themselves the big questions like "Is this right for the most people?" (good) or "How can I twist this to my advantage?" (evil).

@K Just like Kolson said, you can try to play a neutral character instead with a personal goal such as: I need to get enough gold to do [good deed] for my family back home. If I have to become a mercenary, so be it. The important part being your character do something for what they care about, and not a noble ideal.

For Arch only:
This is still possible to do, in the exact manner you just described. However, not everywhere in the Archipelago. The police of Lorinth are pretty damn meticulous when they investigate, even if a little blunt in their approach. It would require for your character to have been framed by someone who covered their tracks well. In Myr, they don't have much of a police force, just some warrior clans who will use more informal methods to punish you... and they don't have any deal with any of the mercenary companies. In the Free Feathers, it's a lot more plausible to happen, but you would have to be pretty unlucky. Your character would need to have a "bad" reputation with the locals and some incriminating evidence to be found guilty. In the Lofell Republic and the Emerald Kingdom however, it could happen just as you described. Why? Because you don't have any money and/or you're no one. Or maybe they just don't care and want this to be over as soon as possible.

As for the Enclave, the Coins themselves would have probably investigated your character's background before making any decision since it's their own backyard. However, they would have probably conscripted your character if he a) had a bad reputation with them prior to this incident b) had a bad reputation with one of their local partners, who then decided to bribe a Coin official to condemn him to servitude or c) was good enough at their job that they offered  him a way out of this mess. In summary, with no external factor such as money or political pressure, the Coins wouldn't condemn your character if his reputation was neutral. It's easy to change that though, as long as your character can be found guilty of something they're not responsible for.

Zeiss, if you don't mind me trying out the game, I'd like to participate in it after all. It sounds interesting in all honesty, so I'm just going to ignore dice rolls exist. Just don't tell me the rolls, only the results and I should be able to close my eyes and imagine I'm on my safe place.

Re: Character creation

Post by Essoje on Fri Dec 18, 2015 1:26 am

The character I'd like to play would be a hunter of cursed known as Manus 'Meatshield' (mechanically a blessed paladin). Meatshield has 2 successful hunts of renegade under his belt with his old crew and was the talk of last month when he linked himself to his last prey (using Puppy Love) and proceeded to break his own right arm with his shield when they proved too nimble for his group to hit with swords and arrows. The cursed fainted from the pain alone and was captured right afterwards.

Thing is, his old crew bailed out on him after the job was done, rumors saying they saw Meatshield laughing as he broke his own arm and that image will haunt them at night for the rest of their lives. Mages say he's clean of madness tho. This next job will be the first he's getting after weeks of infamy, and nobody having seen his face ever didn't help his case one bit.

For Zeiss' eyes only:
In reality, he's Odis of Khelton, 27 years old man, and one of the many sons of a minor noble out of Emerald Kingdom. His noble upbringing was marked by years of listening to his old brothers and sisters' atrocious acts that they did in the name of raising the family's prestige, as well as rigid studies in various areas, including weaving and magic, considering almost all members of his family were cursed mages in some form or another.

He had a hard time adjusting between the teachings of Stoicism and the evil inside his own family, until at the age of 23, he saw himself forced to flee his home, after accidently killing his oldest brother when finally working up the courage to stand up for and defend a commoner friend of his.

During the first week of his hasty flight, he came across an adventurer's corpse, a fighter by the looks of it, killed by an animal based on his wounds, and considering the corpse wasn't eaten, the fighter initiated the combat. Odis, in a moment of either brilliance or foolishness, took this as a sign to take the gear and hide his identify of Odis under the helm, giving birth of Manus, fighter and dabbler on healing spells.

4 years passed, and his face nowadays would be almost unrecognizable by his family after years of scars, a facial tattoo and a broken nose that healed wrong. His self-taught fighting style and knowledge of weaving and access to some white magic made him specially apt at going after cursed mages that broke the law or went mad, an irony that wasn't lost on him.

Odis currently does not have any big dreams or needs, living for the 'here and now'. He'll be happy if he has a job and knows he'll have a full stomach at the end of the week, and if someone gets to smile because of that all the better. That also makes him specially dangerous, as he often abuses his blessed status at times in order to get the job done, going as far as breaking his own arm while using Puppy Love on his target when the rest of his group were knocked down by an explosive trap for example.

Awesome, we did in fact need a fighter and a healer. I've always felt that there's a need for diversity in party classes to be able to handle all or most situations and tactics. Thanks for being our two-in-one.

With my Intelligence, I can take every language and leave just one. Are you sure there aren't more?

Re: Character creation

Post by Zeiss on Fri Dec 18, 2015 2:32 am

*Reads Javan's backstory. Starts laughing.*

Well, I didn't think of that when I designed the daily power Puppy love. Nice.

@Javan This seems more than doable. Just have to iron out a few details your character would know.

  • Since the Cursed are raised in an Academy, more often than not against their will, many feel they're prisoners who are waiting for their wardens to put them on probation. It's similar to the Circles in Dragon Age, but the Academies might let the Cursed roam around the Archipelago a little if they are found to be trustworthy. Most of those who try to escape usually wait until they control their magic well enough, so they don't go mad.
  • Your first party was initially hired to corner a cursed mage so she would exhaust her spells on you.  The "wardens" could then capture her safely without having to report any casualty that mattered, if there were to be any. You were literally a meatshield. But, you actually managed to do the job without the mages' help, so from this point on, the leaders of the Academy decided to let you handle such matters, with only one mage sent to supervise your work. They always preferred to get the cursed mages back alive though, unless it was impossible to do, so keep that in mind.

For Javan only:
The experts on the matter don't really know how someone becomes cursed. Some theorize that it happens the same way someone becomes Blessed, by a "magical storm"; but no one was able to study the phenomenon as it is extremely random and rare.

In summary, it would be extremely unlikely to have several of your family members cursed. They would also be sent to an Academy. However... I can arrange something. I would have to force a few things on you, and fiddle a little bit with your backstory, but it would pretty much stay the same. It would definitely tie you with some of the main events in the setting too. If you can accept that, just tell me.

Otherwise, you'll have to change this part of your backstory.

@Rory There aren't. Two reasons: 1) I don't have much use for more languages in this setting and 2) the in-lore reason, there's not enough people in the Archipelago to have more of them.

It's okay though, since you're playing a well-educated mage.

Zeiss only, again:
Just finished re-reading your background info today and yeah the Republic was what I was thinking. The general idea is to have a character who isn't evil, or good really, but extremely cynical and bitter thanks to the hell he's been through.

Also in general I'm utterly ambivalent as to what class I play, really. I can make anything work with my personality / backstory so... whatever's needed.

Arch only:
Got it. However, if you want my input on this matter, you'll have to give me more to go on. A few things that might give you ideas:

  • The Lofell Republic recently elected a new Doge.
  • There was a huge scandal surrounding one of the theater companies.
  • One of the merchant families made a deal with the Golden Legion, a rival of the Coins.

If you have already something in mind, disregard that.

So far we have a black mage, a red mage (black and yellow magic) and a paladin (white magic). You guys would ideally need another fighter, but Javan's character could be enough since Rory is playing a red mage. A rogue or a green mage could make a nice complement to the party.

I'm just making a few suggestions. With what I have in place, I think you guys would be alright with only one melee character, if you're careful.

@Rory and everyone else  Your character's name will change depending on who named them. Sorry for not bringing this up to your attention until now. Each language in the Archipelago is based on a real life one; so you can base yourself on that. Feel free to create your own name though, as long as it fits in lore.If you want my help on this matter, feel free to ask.

Free Feathers = English
Lofell = French
Emerald = Latin
Lorinth = German
Myr = Polish
Enclave = a mix of everything

@Kolson I'll wait until all of you send me your respective background story and your character sheet before I give you the money you'll use to buy your equipment. I prefer to do all the math at the same time. I can tell you we're going to use the tables on d20srd.
