Good Gaming Tunes
Let's all share the music we like to listen to while gaming. My recommendation is the Baldur's Gate soundtrack. Solid mix of lively combat and atmospheric towns.

What about the Shadow of Colossus soundtrack? We can easily find it on youtube (a one hour complication). I'm certainly going to put that divine music in my ears when I start posting.

I like a lot of the "Two Steps from Hell" albums. They have a lot of music in movie trailers. im not sure if anything they've done has actually made it into the movie itself though. they've got a lot of theyre stuff in hour or 2 hour long videos on youtube. I also like to listen to "Miracle of sound" he has a lot of video game and movie inspired music that's actually really good.

Re: Good Gaming Tunes
For me it depends on what genre the game is and the mood I'm trying to invoke.
If it's fantasy, I prefer a selection of songs from RPG video games like the FF series, Albert Odyssey, the Chrono games, Lunar, stuff like that.
If it's sci-fi, I prefer Xenogears, Starcraft (I've never played the games but I love the soundtrack), Xenosaga, stuff like that.
If it's supposed to be cool, a bit weird, but ultimately tragic I'll turn to the Cowboy Bebop OST tracks every time.

It depends on the mood and the game I'm playing, but I find myself going to the soundtracks from films such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Evangelion (Rebuild's tracks ad nice), Lord of the Rings, and various films that John Williams has composed for. Sometimes go towards are the various World of Warcraft tracks too. The Guild Wars 2 soundtrack is absolutely beautiful; actually, just mark most of the stuff by Jeremy Soule on that list. Speaking of Chrono Trigger, there's some good orchestrated tracks that I like to replay too. It really, really depends on the mood though. Then there's the times when you just can't beat some Metallica, techno, or whatever comes up in the playlist.

I've been making my own music since High School yes. No I'm not sharing any of it, I'm entirely too shy to do that.

*sigh* I shouldn't have said anything hah. No see I'm... weird. I can't play any instruments, I can't read sheet music, and I'm tone deaf. (clarification: That does not mean I can't differentiate notes, it means I cannot identify them by ear like most musically inclined people can). When I was... much younger waay back in the day I learned musical theory by listening to songs by Nobuo Uematsu (this is not a joke). Everything I learned at the start was from analyzing the way he did his music, and I interpreted internally as patterns and equations (go figure, now days I know that music very literally is audio math). From that I started tinkering with a few things until I found my first mod tracker, which allowed me to literally do the music in patterns rather than in verse. And since then I've used a number of programs, including a few I coded myself during my college days, that allow me to digitally track the music, then push that into a good audio editor like Audition to polish and loop and whatnot, and finally to shove it out as an MP3.

Well if it's any consolation, it has to be acceptable if you like listening to it. You should get a second opinion privately from a friend or a family member, or at least someone you know will be brutally honest.

Does anyone else play an instrument? I play drums in a punkish band, though I'm pretty much intermediate level.

Yeah, piano/keyboard. Was in a band in my teens. I mess around with my own tunes occasionally, although I don't have a lot of time to squeeze that in with everything else nowadays.

Re: Good Gaming Tunes
Have any of you guys played Splatterhouse? Arch might not be into it. He made a distinction between violence and "violence" in his AC:Revelations review, and this game is full of "violence". Gore. Just thought I'd mention that, but the music in this game is great. The developers got Mastodon to a lot of the heavy metal in it, and it is sublime. If Arch ever brings horror or some crazy crisis situation into the campaign, some of this would be very appropriate.
Here's a link to volume 1 on Grooveshark, where you can listen for free:
http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Splatterhouse+Volume+1/7110184
Volume 1 is all of Mastodon's work, Volume 2 is Howard Drossin's, sting music and the like. I would recommend listening to "The Corrupted", "Necro Lab", and "Zombies in the Mausoleum" first. They're pretty thematic.

I used to back in High School. Now I mostly just sing in the shower.

Re: Good Gaming Tunes
While we're on the subject of gaming tunes, I think at least Hanuel and Arche will recall talking about old game themes. Someone brought up Sonic 2 SMS, and I thought I understood which game, but I didn't. I was thinking of Sonic Spinball, A game I remember never being able to make past the 2nd level in(I didn't own it). Every level is basically played like a pinball machine, but it's music is quite thematic for 8-bit sound. The one theme that really takes me back is the boss theme:

And here it is "remastered":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7CMQiQbAw0
When that track played, I would get a sense of dread and foreboding, and is iconic of the game for me, even more so than the game's actual theme.
Also, none of the bosses in the game actually attack you, but if you fall into the acid or get burned by a flame, you don't lose your rings, you just die; the rings are basically just there for points. So techically I shouldn't have been afraid of the bosses, but I was young, and the music was all it took to "sell" those bosses to me.

Re: Good Gaming Tunes
I actually rather enjoyed several Sonic tunes back in the day, Pinball being no exception. I still distinctly recall this pseudo spider looking boss in the shape of Robotnik, used to freak me out.
For some reason when I think of Sonic boss themes though this one just LEAPS to mind:
