The orb is clearly messed up in some way, even with your limited understanding of magic that is clear. But otherwise it just looks like some kind of magical artifact.

Zeiss looks at Sethos with an expression of disbelief.
"Never touch strange artifacts. I thought we learned that by the time Kez touched that crystal."
He turns to Fierneceal.
"I don't think you should touch that thing. It seems really dangerous. As for giving us the ability to operate scion technology..."
The word "scion" sounds strange to Zeiss.
"...Just tell us when you can do it again."
He stands there, waiting for Fierneceal's next action, ready to go through the process Snarg just went through.

Fierneceal is still shaking her head. "I'm not sure I'll be able to for a while, that took a lot out of me." She actually looks like she's about to pass out, leaning against the wall.
Hanuel, meanwhile, has more sensibly decided to examine the orb without touching it and frowns after several minutes. "This... was Materia. It doesn't look or feel like Materia as I know it, something horribly wrong happened to it."

"He-here, sit down and take a swig." Snarg pulls off his pack after taking out a waterskin. He offers it as a seat and offers the waterskin to Fiernaceal. "M-maybe we should just sack that up for now. I've got one in here, hang on." He reaches into his pack and pulls out a burlap sack and offers it forward.

Thinking that someone should work on getting Araiguna back to his normal state, Zeiss goes examine the device to see if he could put it back together. If not, he plans to finding some plans that may be laying around.

- The orb absorbs into you and within an instant you feel a monumental screaming abyss of pain yawning before you. You cannot see or feel or think anything anymore, just the roar of horror that seems to be stretched out like someone is constantly slowing it down and never stopping, doomed to slow and slow for all of eternity. All around you is a pitiless, violet light and you get the sensation of millions upon millions of others like you nearby, equally trapped, equally lost, before abruptly and horrifyingly your gut lurches as the ground falls away from you and you plummet, for miles and miles at inhuman speeds before within an instant you find yourself back in the research facility, hurtling across the room. You have about one second to realize where you are now before you slam into a wall hard enough almost knock you unconscious. The not-Materia is laying over where you tried to absorb it, apparently having not moved from the spot.

- After some time you finally reach the point where you realize what you are staring at is in fact a series of journals by whomever was working here before. Apparently this entire facility was under command of Warlord Anetheron, who was loyal to someone known as the Gold Lord, who had invented a new secret weapon to use against something called the Shadows. This device, which you see before you, was in fact something that would forcibly change the 'lesser races', which you understand to be any sentient that is not a Scion, into a Tusker, a race the Scions enslaved regularly. These Tuskers were specially 'designed' to be non sentient, mere beasts, but very susceptible to mental control. Thus one Scion could mentally command an entire company of expendable Tuskers to battle.

Snarg's brow furrows deeply. "Uh-oh. I think we've found our device, but..." He seems to search for words a moment before continuing on. "I'm looking at some notes here. - After considerable more searching you do learn that there is a 'de-Tusker' option that Anetheron insisted be put in. Apparently this lost him favor with the Gold Lord, who insisted there was no need for wasting resources on such trivial concerns of lesser beings. Nevertheless you do learn how to do it, but... it requires a Scion to utilize.
