Re: 1st adventure: the Fey one
- For Mihai only:
- "As I understand it, you seem to have quite the tolerance. I'm a little intimidated."
She appears a little embarrased, but replies with a casual tone, "Don't worry, I'll go easy on you." She pauses, like if she realized something, then just shakes her head, and adds, "So, coming or not? I'd rather not stay here." She points to the crowd.
Mihai gets up."Sure, I'm not quite the party animal myself either."
As you leave the table, you see Velstar speaking to the mayor about something; she turns her head, and just smiles at you, before returning her attention towards Irving.
Fedler brings Mihai just outside the village, where you can see the party in the distance. Even though neither of you has brought a torch, you realize you don't need it. The sky is clear, and the moon is almost full. She sits down in the grass, and throws a cup at you.
Mihai catches it.
She takes out a corkscrew and starts working on the bottle. "Damn it, I hate this thing." She looks up at Mihai. "Not going to sit down?" She finally opens the bottle.
He sits down
She fills Mihai's cup, then hers. After she takes a sip, she says, "Uh, I didn't think she would give me the good stuff."
"Who?"
"Oh, Silver. I mean Velstar. We call her Silver though."
Fedler looks at Mihai's face, and uncertain what his expression means, continues her explanation. "You know, after Silver Alto. She was a mage who had a seat at the Citadel, around fifty years ago. People think that Velstar looks like her, even if we have only songs to rely on."
"She must be a good Warden, then. I know she was Steve's teacher, at any rate."
She looks surprised. "Oh, so that's why she acted this way around him. I shouldn't be surprised. She did live at the Citadel for a long time. She..." She realizes something. "Uh. I see now."
"What?"
"Your friend Steve. He's cursed, right? Silver always said she was one of those tasked with teaching them."
It's Mihai's turn to look surprised. "News to me. I told you before, we met less than 48 hours ago."
"Oh. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. You didn't know anything about each other before this job of yours?"
"Not a thing" He takes a sip. "It was unusual for us to be hired for this job. All three of us unknown quantities."
She finishes her cup, then serves herself some more wine. "So what are you going to do when the job is finished? Stay together?"
Mihai shrugs."Who knows. I just needed some money. Been playing it by ear since I arrived in the Feathers. I guess I wouldn't mind."
"Huh. It must be nice to travel. One of the perks I guess."
Mihai chuckles. "Has it's moments."
"This place is better than my old life, though. It's not city fancy, but you can look people in the eye."
"Back home... too much playacting. Backstabbing. Or just plain stabbing," he mutters in a lower voice.
As Mihai says that, Fedler touches the scar on her neck. She's thinking about something.
"So..." he takes a sip. "...it seems your neck has some experience with that sort of thing."
She quickly pulls her hand away. She stays silent for a few seconds, pensive. While looking at the party in the distance, she says, "I was studying to be a bard once. Found a master willing to teach me."
She thinks about how to continue. "I... I used to sing at this inn in my spare time. The Great Havoc it was called; it was near the port, and many sailors came in for a drink."
Fedler takes another sip, and Mihai listens.
She quickly glances at him, but looks straight ahead again. "One day, pirates came in. I was sixteen. Nobody knew about them, so I just kept singing. One of them... tried to buy my time. He was angry, and drunk. It got more violent, and some people tried to protect me. So he just held me, and put a knife on my throat."
She pauses again, then takes a sip of wine.
"The hunter entered the room. He always had his bow with him, no matter where he went. The man died, but..." She turns away, avoiding Mihai's gaze. "He fell, and the knife followed."
"Must have fallen pretty hard, to leave that kind of---", he stops himself, realizing something.
Mihai notices that her eyes are a little teary. "...Aldan's magic wasn't strong enough." Mihai realizes she's speaking about the hunter. "When we realized it, it was too late. It had already been days. Magic doesn't care about how your voice sounds."
Mihai's eyes close for a moment in a grimace, as the image of the Fedler that never was flashes across his mind, for a second.
"I..." - he starts, but then corrects his tone a bit. "In the life where you went on to become a Bard, that cursed animal might have taken half this village before someone stopped it. I heard this somewhere else, but... there are no branches in life. Not when you come down to it. The illusion comes you look back and start asking "why me" and "what if". But if it had been different, it wouldn't be you here. It would be someone else looking back, asking a different set of questions."
And to make it softer, he adds, "Though... there's nothing wrong with feeling what you're feeling either."
She looks at him, surprised. She ponders his words for a moment. Then, a soft smile spreads across her lips. "Thank you. I've never really thought about it this way."
Mihai shrugs, slightly embarrassed - "Well...I guess you can find wisdom anywhere. Maybe it's more about hearing that saying."
Her smile is now completely genuine. "I guess so." Fedler looks away for a moment, but then blurts out, "Want me to sing? I can't project my voice for a crowd anymore, but one person should be okay..."
Mihai is slightly taken aback "Um... yeah."
"Hmm, I don't have any instrument to accompany me. You'll have to imagine the music. You may have heard it before."
She prepares her voice for a second, then starts singing.- Song:
Mihai is spellbound for a moment. He takes a second to compose himself, then, "Ma'am... that's a lovely singing voice you got there."
She playfully slaps the back of Mihai's head. "Don't you call me ma'am." She isn't embarrassed anymore. "But thank you." She stands up, rubs her pants to the remove the grass stuck to it, and adds, "We should get back. It's getting cold."
Mihai gets up as well. "Yeah..."
As soon as they start walking, she will tug on Mihai's sleeve, urging him to stop.
When he turns around to face her, she surprises him with a kiss. He kisses her back.

- For Steve :
- Yen nods at Steve, and happily follows him. Fedler seems to have disappeared somewhere, but that doesn't seem to worry the little girl. She brings the young mage to a small clearing just outside the village, where he will be able to practice to his heart's content. Even though night has completely fallen by now, there is enough light coming from the stars and the full moon that there is no need to bring a torch.
Breeze squeezes herself out of the bag, and happily stretches her wings before flying into the air. "Oh, this is a lot better!" She stops right in front of Steve's face, and while patting his nose, she states with a playful tone, "You wanna have my help too, right? Then you should feel honored my loyal companion! For I have read lots of poetry books in my time!"
Yen giggles. "She's very smart. She even helped me with my homework!"

- "Great, that's great. Then I don't need to sugarcoat this. It's no where near ready and is taking much longer to do than I thought it would. I think I should have shot for something more simple but I'm committed now so anything you can do to help is great." Steve will then perform his poem, trying to use his natural charm and sense of timing to at least put on a descent performance, even if the words aren't any good.

Zeiss of Dreamkeeper wrote:
- For Konrad:
Breeze is oblivious to Konrad's eyes of lightning, and she goes back to hiding in Yen's bag.
As soon as he finished eating, Konrad realize that there are no distinct group of people anymore; those who drink are also singing just next to those who are dancing on an improvised dance floor. They are currently having a changing partner dance, which proves easy to join despite the differences between this and what Konrad is used to. It is quite fun, even when the villagers decide to have a good laugh and mix things up a little by giving fun only male partners to the red mage. They are clearly laughing at this whole situation once Konrad gets paired up with a 7 feet tall man, with biceps bigger than the Myrzen's head. Eralda and her master join in on the laugh, even as they are playing of their instrument for everyone's enjoyment.
This giant of a man is also the only one willing to take Konrad on his drinking challenge. They set up a table just for this occasion, and line up 20 mugs of beer in front of you two. Bets are placed, a crowd is formed around you, and two factions are forming. As Konrad chugs down these healthy beverages, half of the crowd will cheer for him while the other do the same for their own champion. The red mage starts to feel a little more than just wobbly after the sixth mug, but his opponent isn't stopping. Konrad fears that the eight mug which he is about to drink will be the last one he can take, but just as his lips touch the beer, he notices that the villagers are telling him that the giant farmer is already down on the ground.
Victory in hand, Konrad can collect his spoils (5 pieces of silver), and will attempt to find someone who can sing in Wytrwaly, without the beer this time, or he will find himself knocked unconscious. This is a difficult task though, considering the geography of Waterglass.
"I know someone who can sing in Wytrwaly," declares a sweet voice. This is Eralda, and with a smile scotched in her face, she points to her master, Jacques Brel.
"I could certainly use some practice," says the aged bard as he sits down besides Konrad. With a mischievous tone, he adds "Now, don't slur too much."
Both Konrad and the master bard start singing, while Eralda accompany you with her violin, much to the villagers' rejoice as they will ask both of you to do it again so they can join in this time.

- Konrad forces a laugh. Forces. If you people were to count your blessings at this moment, you'd come up short whether you knew it or not.
Euphoria and the demon drink courses through Konrad's veins. Surprised at such such a staunch win(methinks the reward kind of makes it hollow), his first instinct is to slur a victory cheer in Wytrwaly.
When Eralda speaks up, he looks at her as if just noticing her(not the case) and greets her like a familiar friend, and then shakes Jacques's hand firmly. "Jacques Brel, finally! I didn't get to meet you that evening at the Stormy Maiden!" he continues to speak in this language unless he is asked politely to change back. "I've always carried a fascination for the el...el...ele-gaunt nuances of different lang...tongues, but it's been too long since I got to speak to someone in my native tongue. I didn't know how much I missed it until I started for...n...novelty's sake. Excuse me, 'novelty', my Myr homeland? Nonsense, what has happened to me? Come, I know just the song to start with, call it a request."
They start with a festive performance of Hej Sokoly. He requires little effort to jog his memory, as this is a song too few in Myr are unfamiliar with. As he sings with the bards, he occasionally glances at Eralda intentionally for their eyes to meet. Is this what passes for subtlety in inebriation, or is he timing their glances? Or is it mere coincidence?- skill:

Re: 1st adventure: the Fey one
- For Steve:
- Breeze and Yen listen intently at Steve's improvised recitation. The fairy is analyzing the poem's structure (hopefully), while Yen has just decided to sit in the grass and let the words work their magic, as she appears quite enthralled. Once Steve has finished, the little girl stands up on her feet, and starts clapping.
"It was good, wasn't it Breeze?"
"Yeah, not bad, not bad. He still has quite a way to go before he can measure up to Veldtralan though. Look Steve, you should switch the third and fourth verse of the first strophe, while also changing the verb for a noun instead. Otherwise, it will feel disconnected from the second strophe. We don't have much time, so I'll just give you a few pointers."- OOC:
- Your Knowledge Culture tells you that Veldtralan was a great writer and poet who lived before the Flood happened.
She then goes on a lengthy explanation, which is difficult to follow even for Steve. Yen admires the intellect on display, even if she doesn't understand all of it. After only twenty minutes, both Steve and Breeze manage to turn this first draft into something much more satisfying.
"There! That should be enough for your recitation. Good thing you asked for my help! Breeze the Fairy, at your service."
She bows in boasting manner, if such a thing can be done. Yen approaches the fairy and exclaims,
"That was so cool Breeze! How did you know all of that?"
"Books, sweetie. Books. Steve made a few mistakes; well, quite a lot actually, but the content was good to begin with, so we didn't even need to make him rewrite the whole thing."
She turns to the mage, a big smile scotched to her face, and gives him a thumbs up.
"You can recite all of it now, you should be good to go."
- For Konrad:
- Jacques Brel is evidently a master at his craft, as he is the one who actually carries Konrad through the song without making him look bad in front of the crowd. They don't even seem to realize Konrad's moments of hesitation, as the bard simply raises his voice to make it look like only one person is supposed to sing at this part, and with his arm around his shoulders, he also guides him so they both follow the same tempo.
Eralda, busy with the accompaniment, nonetheless flashes a smile towards Konrad, before she has to return her attention on the crowd, as she is working right now.

"Uh, hello? I just told you buddy; books!"
She puts her hands on her hips to look like the hero she is.
"Seriously, I've read lots of them. Marie's library was full of it!"
Just for fun, Yen takes the same pose as Breeze.
"Oh yeah, keep doing that! But you must raise your chin too!"
The little fairy starts correcting Yen, and now helps her the same way she just did with Steve.

"Wait, you want me to recite the poem without changes? Not sure why you would want to, but sure." She then proceeds to repeat both versions of the poem, only messing up once. And only then because of Steve. "Sorry mate, you're the one who made a mistake when you recited it."
"Yes, yes I did. Breeze, you really are a genius. That level of memorization and understanding is rare in our kind. Are all fairies as good at learning as you are?"

"We should tell Silver!" happily says Yen. "Maybe you know something she doesn't."
"Yes! I shall challenge her to a game of word chain!"
The little girl looks at the mage.
"Uh, Breeze, you forgot to answer Steve."
"Oh yeah, right." She flies back in front of him. "Sorry, what was the question again?"
"The other fairies. Do they learn like you?"
"Yes! That was the question! And I don't know."

"Yes, Breeze shall also be an adjective from now on!" She then sits on Yen's shoulder, who sits in the ground to listen to Steve.
Steve laughs at Breeze's joke and spends the next 15 minutes running through the poem, practicing his inflections and pauses and getting his friend's feedback on the performance. Once done, he'll invite them to join him at the inn for the performance, assuming they are still interested after so much practice.

- Yen and Breeze's comments weren't what Steve expected; Yen thought that his performance was already perfect, while Breeze said that he should take more heroics poses. When he offers them to join him for the official recitation, they immediately accept. The little fairy pouts a little when she realizes she needs to hide into the bag again, but she complies without any resistance.
The group returns to the village, and once they approach the inn, they will notice that it is full of people. Velstar is standing in front of the building, watching over the villagers who are passing by, clearly waiting for Steve to show up. She greets him with an affectionate smile, and says,
"I've prepared the room for you. We improvised a little stage, but it should do the job. Ready to win the poetry award of Waterglass?"

- Well yay, that was fun. At this rate, Eralda will be plying her trade into the evening for a while yet, so Konrad backs off for now.
Konrad looks for a gambling table, and if there is none or if there's no Liar's Dice game to join, he'll ask around for people who have dice, and borrow some empty cups. If he has to collect dice from more than one person, he'll grab some napkins or some parchment(preferred) and write a number on each corresponding to the number of dice each person is lending for the game, as well as the name of the lender. He'll make a duplicate of each to keep for himself, so it'll be much easier in case someone loses their piece of paper. Eg: "Peter Pan, 2"(name of lender, # of dice lent)
He'll start a game of Liar's Dice. Whether or not he's able to start one, he'll still join whatever people are playing, and he'll strike opportunity like a low-down snake in the grass.

- For Konrad:
- Konrad finds a table where the plates have been cleared for a game of dice, and many people are already betting on some players. They heartily welcome the mage, and give him a seat at the table. The first few games make a tidy profit for Konrad who gains 7 pieces of silver by telling a few lies at the right moment. It seems everyone is backing down, not willing to participate in the mage's winning strike anymore, no matter how charming he is. That is until one man steps forward, and challenges Konrad.
He appears to be somewhere in his forties, and despite what the few strays of grey hair grey might indicate, he appears to be in good shape. He smiles at Konrad, sits down, and places his bets. Everything goes fine for the young mage, until the man starts to win non-stop. But even a close observation of his hands reveal that no trickery is taking place, if it is possible to detect at all.
The game is over, and Konrad must give 11 pieces of silver to the other player, who smiles politely at him. Members of the audience are disappointed that he has lost, but that man was a pretty good player.
- For Steve:
- Yen quickly takes the same pose as Steve, just like Breeze showed her how to do it. Velstar is looking at the two of them, amused by this display of buffoonery.
"Then you better get in there, and sweep them off their feet."

Before she can answer and things get too maudlin, Steve pushes his way into the inn and up to the stage. Waving at the crowd he shouts, "Hello Waterglass! Who's ready for some entertainment!?"
After pumping up the crowd sufficiently Steve will dedicate his performance to his friends who all fought bravely to take down the wolf and to Y and B for helping him finish the poem in time. He'll then perform the poem to the best of his ability.

Konrad smiles and chuckles at his loss, being very sporting about it. "Methinks I should have started this before the drinking challenges. Still, I suppose with everyone bowing out, there needed to be a champion. Well-played, mate." He offers his hand to shake.
All of these activities have worked up Konrad's appetite, so he grabs some seconds and takes a seat with his new friends, shooting the shit with a steady flow of drink to keep the buzz while coming down from his earlier stumbling drunkenness, relaxing and waiting for the bard to finish his set, or grow tired of playing as the case may be(I'll bet encores and requests have kept them busy).
After eating, he'll get up, continuing to socialize while browsing the revelers, looking for Fedler.

- The man accepts Konrad's handshake, and replies with a Lorinthian accent, "You weren't so bad yourself."
He then leaves the table, and recedes into the crowd. Konrad goes for some more food and beer, and by looking at how lively the party is, the bards are going to be busy for at least a few more hours. Understanding that he might as well look for Fedler for now, he leaves the table he was sitting at and goes mingle a little more with the crowd. But no matter who he asks, no one seems to have seen Fedler for the last hour or so. Just as he walks in front of the inn, Konrad notices a strange weight in one of his pockets; a piece of silver.
Suddenly, Yen appears in front of the mage, and happily exclaims, "Konrad! Steve is going to recite his poem! Come!"
She takes his hand, and tries to lead him into the inn's common hall.

- Examine the silver:
- Does it look bad or something? Spellcraft to detect weirdness, and what kind if that is reasonable. I realize it's just the net gain from all my schemes at trying to earn money, but you never know until you check.
Spellcraft 8
YenSilver is fine "Oh he is? Can't wait to hear it! Hang on, I'll be right behind you kid. I gotta go tip the bard, 'k?" (the coin is donated to Jacques, I imagine Eralda gets her cut from him)
Silver is NOT fine "Oh he is? Great! Lead the way, sport!" Will deal with this later.
Edit: status of silver determined: NOT fine.
Awareness 7
At the inn, Konrad will scan the crowd for familiar faces, to know whether the oracle might be watching.
Konrad soon arrives at the inn to sit and hear Steve's miniature epic of their recent feat.

Re: 1st adventure: the Fey one
- For Steve:
- Velstar gives Steve her usual affectionate smile.
"You're welcome."
- For Konrad:
- A spell has been woven onto the piece of silver. It would require you more time to determine the nature of the spell.
You do not see the Oracle or one of her goons in the inn, but it is also fully packed.
When Steve steps onto the makeshift stage, he notices that Yen has lead Konrad into the inn's common hall, which is already packed. Nevertheless, Velstar manages to convince the villagers to make some place for the red mage and the little girl. The audience had started to get restless until Steve had appeared, since it appears they had been looking forward to this poem quite a bit. Once it is clear that the recitation will start soon, things start to quiet down. He knew the practice he just had would serve him well.
- The poem (for reference):
- Act 1, Part 1
Intent: It starts with a description of the town of Waterglass and her productive and generous people.
Highlights: Uses the lady who gave us free food earlier as an example of the kind of people who live in Waterglass.
Act 1, Part 2
Intent: That's when the wolf makes itself known. I'll ask Saemon for details on this as we walk over to the inn so that I get them mostly right barring artistic licence.
Highlights: The decisive action of the town leaders (Mayor, Saemon, and Fedler) in coming up with a plan and putting aside "other considerations" (ie politics) to do so (make the political part subtle so only the locals will understand). Fedler stoically leaves to find help.
Act 2, Part 1
Intent: Enter the brave Mercs from Highwind, The Coins, on a job seeking out a band of thieves on behalf of a beautiful client who shall remain nameless in this tale.
Highlights: Start the legend of Konrad "Goldgiver" as the foreign man with a plan and a mighty love of charity and baked goods. Mihai "The Lone Wolf" as the clever and mysterious hero with the heart of gold who is kind to children and loves animals and anything else that cements a good "bad boy with a heart of gold" image with the ladies. You're welcome K. And finally Steve Oldturn, Citadel-trained mage and orphan, poet of poets, and all around excellent guy, who spends his lonely days pining away for Zelky, whom he characterizes as the love of his life trapped in a tower of fizzy ice by the evil General [Stoikotita for 'Ambition.' As usual, Steve will invent the word if he has to. Stoikotita is best language.].
Act 2, Part 2
Intent: Having found them, Fedler makes her plea: Help her and her friends save Waterglass!
Highlights: All three heroes are touched and head her plea. For fortune of fortunes, Fedler knows where the thieves be! A trade in kind is arranged...
Act 3, Part 1
Intent: Having arrived at the village Steve is shocked to meet his old teacher Velstar once again and they hear the story of brave Igor, who, determined to save his town, put together a party to track and slay the great beast and ended up mauled and dying for his trouble.
Highlights: Touched by his bravery, Fedler, Mihai, and Steve immediately set out after a cure, where they are confronted by the great beast after acquiring the herb. Insert horrifying description of beast here. They put on a brave running fight, and Steve even manages to burn it with a spell, but without the rest of the team the wolf is able to trap and begin overpowering them. But their courage touched the heart of a passing bluebird who recognized her friend Fedler, The Forest Protector, for all know that the woods protect their own. Determined to help the group, that bird of birds, that queen of the forest, called out, distracting the wolf and leading it on a merry chase away from the group. They are able to return and save Igor. But during the fighting the group made an unexpected discovery: The beast was not mad!
Act 3, Part 2
Intent: Reunited, Fedler, Saemon, Konrad, Mihai, and Steve set out to confront the beast and end the threat once and for all!
Highlights: Mihai and Steve work out that the beast is not mad, but acting strangely none the less. Mihai insists that they try to reason with it before destroying it, that perhaps it is a victim too. Grimly the party sets out and Mihai enacts his plan, but the wolf is too far gone to hear his plea and the party proceeds to fight the wolf to the death. The party fought well, even blowing the wolf's head off after the end of an epic exchange. Thinking they had won they were surprised when the wolf's body rose again and redoubled its ferocity. It quickly downed Saemon and injured almost everyone. At that moment Konrad got a glimpse of something strange and had Steve confirm it--the wolf had a fully formed and stable Fire Element buried within its chest! The beast then downed Steve. Armed with this information, Mihai tumbled his way through the lashing magical arms of the beast and strikes the Element with his sword, causing two things to happen: The Element explodes pushing away and knocking down the group and Mihai's sword is destroyed, literally undone when the Fire Element converted back to raw magic.
Epilogue
Intent: Bring things to a close.
Highlights: Sum up the story and drum up cheers for the heroes. Lampshade the mystery with no resolution by saying that is a different story and that it is for another time.
And when the words begin to flow, this thought seems well founded, for the audience is captivated by the story. They seem happy that so much screen time is given to the local citizens, and especially their leaders. One might think that the mention of the wolf not being mad would make the villagers slightly worried, but they seem to consider it a simple metaphor they cannot understand, such as the bird that mysteriously saved the members of the Forandor's expedition from the animal's first attack. If nothing else, they prefer this version to what must have really happened. The wolf getting back up to fight the party again is a much more interesting story than the simple death it must have been. After all, they're not dumb; they know that poets embellish stories for the sake of entertainment, and frankly, it's better this way.
Steve pronounces the last words of this epic poem, and the villagers rise up to applaud him for this amazing recitation. The young mage knows that his presentation, even if it was still amateurish, was still delivered well enough that people won't even notice that it was his first time ever that he did something like this.
Steve can see Velstar and Yen clapping on the other side of the room, near Konrad. It's also almost imperceptible, but he also catches a glimpse of Breeze's head who momentarily stuck her head out of the bag to watch the presentation.

Re: 1st adventure: the Fey one
Steve laughs and waves and bows and generally gets caught up in the moment. He's never been this excited before and at this moment he looks like he could bounce his way out of the common room and high-five the moon.

Re: 1st adventure: the Fey one
A few villagers pat Steve as he passes by, and the innkeeper will ask if he could have a copy of this poem; you know, for posterity.
Velstar and Yen (and maybe Konrad?) come to congratulate him.
"You know, with a little more training, you could make a living out of this," comments the older mage.
"Like the bards outside?" asks Yen.
"To sing his poems would require a lot more training, but yes, like that."

Re: 1st adventure: the Fey one
Konrad gets up and applauds with the rest of them, and goes up to congratulate the performing member of his dream team with Yen and Velstar. "Bravo Steve. I believe she's right, you have a talent, and it would be a shame to see it wasted. For now, take a moment to enjoy this, you've earned it twice over."
"Listen, have any of you seen Fedler?" he asks, directing his query at the three of them.

Re: 1st adventure: the Fey one
Ah, it appears there is one less canary in the world. "Well, it must have been some time ago, I haven't been able to find her. Did she decide to call it quits with the festival and go hunting?"
The subtlety of his suggestion is palpable, and merely meant to go over the little one's head, especially taking care to avoid mentioning something akin to any after-celebrations.
