March 20th
A new day dawns for the aspiring coup members.
Meanwhile...
Higaide slowly comes to, still in groaning pain with aches everywhere. After a few more blinks, he realizes he's staring at a somewhat familiar ceiling. A few more blinks and Higaide's thoughts solidify enough to recognize it; it's Scionic architecture. A few seconds later a horrifying visage with a grey-toned carapace looks down upon the lying Higaide and asks, in heavily accented Common, if he was feeling any better.

(Mental process initializing -> Scionic architecture + ghastly grey carapace with accented Common = onboard the Sperca? Either that, or the Olthoi really are expanding.)
Higaide takes a second to get his bearings - "Yes..." - he answers at length, not really sure that he's telling the truth - "thank..." - he stops himself, as his memory starts rushing back in.
"Where's Sareth...?" - he snaps - "the Lord Elf that was with me."

The Olthoi, who identifies herself as Klitxkri, speaks with surprisingly reassuring tones despite the broken grammar that the Lord Elf was safe, though being kept sedated by the orders of their captain. Higaide himself was being allowed to regain consciousness due to the fact that he was considered 'more trustworthy' than most others are, given his history with the ship.

Re: March 20th
Higaide lets out a sigh of relief, thanking the carapaced lady again. Then has half a mind to get the four remaining platinum bars and bang them against his head, for having taken that stupid risk with Sareth's life, but no point having the Olthoi think he's crazy.
He tries to sit up.
"Ms. Klitxkri, me and my companion are urgently needed back at Holtburg. Could you tell me where we are right now? The region, i mean."

Re: March 20th
First action: Zeiss and Advoc go to Glenden Woods through the Hub and then gather information about the current political situation. I will also try to find out who could be an ally for our upcoming coup.
Second action: Find Zeiss' father whereabouts. Is he still alive? If so, is he still living at their old home? Is he alone or does he have another family? If I can't find him there, I will check at the company he used to work at and ask the neighbours where he is.
Third action: depending on whether he found him or not, Zeiss will meet his father. Zeiss would obviously be wary of such a conversation considering they haven't seen each other in almost ten years.
Note: I will be discreet in my inquiries in case I'm being followed. Roll stealth when necessary.

- plans reference:
- Direct link to modified 'management and one-off' tasks for reference: https://archengeiadnd.forumotion.com/t355p30-coup-d-etat#19631
I will post this link in each of my relevant 'daily actions' IC posts for quick reference, to remove the task of searching through posts to find it.
Assignments at the start of a new day:
- Rory will
create the "Passing Through" office, andassign Qui-Gonas administrator of said officeto the "Passing Through" office" under Van, as outlined by Zeissincluding all tasks and responsibilities it entails. - Rory will order the 'recruitment' net to gather observations on candidates for leadership positions, and to do do the same for candidates to work in the field espionage. When we are ready to interview candidates(on a different day), we will pretty much handwave it with a few rolls.
--Rory will receive both reports by the end of the day and hold onto them, with intent to sort through the former himself, on finding a leader for the Exchange militia - tomorrow. Kolson will get the other when he arrives(unless he has already arrived - I'm a little unclear on where he is right now).
First action: Higaide's 'guardians' will go with Zeiss and Advoc to Glenden Woods, as per our plan. To save time for Zeiss, Rory will prep them with the journey's provisions and other necessities and
"Alright, this guy is your leader from here to Glenden Woods and back, until you meet up with Higaide there and he says otherwise, or when you return and meet him here."
Second action: Martial training
Let us see what the new day brings, and if Rory's speechifying from the day before has had the desired impact.
Third action(NC AP): Provisions, a charted course, docking schedules, and a mental timeline in advance and preparation around the blockade for casting off and writing to the Olthoi(who will inform Osteth), are all prepared for the great migration to Osteth. Before ironing out negotiations with the Blackbrine, Rory feels it would be prudent to inform the refugees first, so that is what he does. He enunciates and speaks mostly on the fly, but not without noticeable pauses. A couple of times, he looks at a note card that is clearly visible, so it's obvious he's not good with speeches. And yet, this is a speech worth giving, and therefore a speech worth preparing, which he has had time to do.
All guards will be available for this speech. The sergeants, once ex-adventurers, will be a skeleton crew during, guarding the entrance to the Veil.
- OOC knowledge:
- 1. he does not give this speech with regard for the former bandits, and doesn't take care to ensure that they are present. They can take care of themselves, and have been for a while now.
2. The following is part of the speech, but important OOC knowledge: At a nearby table is a book with lines in it, guarded by a few 'rent-a-guards. In it there are a few columns for important info, such as 'name', 'clan name', 'surname', etc. "I and an associate will be in negotiations with the veteran sailors who will be your hosts for the journey. The negotiation may be swift, but I guarantee you that swift or slow, you will have a reasonable deadline for sign-up set in stone once talks with the fleet are concluded."
3. A shift of two guards will be hanging around the book from morning to evening, no night shifts. While the guards would basically be off-duty, they'd still have to be around to watch the book - though it is just a sign-up book, it doesn't need to be watched like a hawk. They can play cards or what have you and visit, but they can't be getting drunk. 1-2 beers is okay. Rory will pretty much tell it like it is.
Speeches
- Refugees:
- First he meets with the general populace of refugees, the ones who aren't working for the Exchange. With everyone gathered around, he outlines the situation and briefs them thoroughly:
"Holtburg can barely take care of you. In most cases they aren't, and neither do they want to. Well, to hell with 'em. I have been planning a way out for you, to a country south of here called the "Osteth Republic". They are advanced in the sciences, advanced in their way of living, and they are currently welcoming refugees with open arms. I have everything taken care of, and I have yet to meet the fleet that will transport you to negotiate a price, which I can wholly afford."
"This will be different than being picked up in a flying ship full of giant bugs and being evacuated here, or paddling ashore yourselves - whether the people here wanted you or not. Before, it was important to me and my friend Higaide that our people were alive and free. The next step is assuring that you all lead stable lives, and - even if eventually - return to a state of prosperity.
"To all of you who aren't human, I kept you in mind when planning this...'great migration', and this choice is open to you as well. We're all in the same boat, and it would be wretched of us to ignore our brothers, and sisters, who are suffering alongside our own kind. Whether seized or destroyed, we each had something taken from us, violently. We owe it to each other, gathered here, to look out for our neighbors, no matter how they look, talk, or even smell.
"What matters most, even more than that, is that you have the choice. Take the ticket, or stay here, you do what you feel is best for you and yours, and allow them to choose for themselves as I am allowing for you now."
At a nearby table is a book with lines in it, guarded by a few 'rent-a-guards. In it there are a few columns for important info, such as 'name', 'clan name', 'surname', etc. "I and an associate will be in negotiations with the veteran sailors who will be your hosts for the journey. The negotiation may be swift, but I guarantee you that swift or slow, you will have a reasonable deadline for sign-up set in stone once talks with the fleet are concluded. If you are ready to leave this city behind, you must sign your name in the book there. You are declaring your choice by doing so, but once you are on a ship, there is no going back. May all the gods and elements guide you toward the answers you seek."
- guards:
- Next, he meets with the guards.
"In spite of the steep learning curve you've been facing, you've been giving it your all and training earnestly. You all want to be of use to what we've been building, and for that you have my admiration and my thanks. You have it from the bottom of my heart.
"You were all there to hear the offer I had for the refugees living here. If you wish to put your own name in that book there, and leave with them at the appointed time, I will not stop you. You came to me as refugees, and you are free to make that choice as one of them. If you want to fight as guards and soldiers for the Exchange, stay, and that is what you will be. But I will not keep you from the alternative if you feel it is what's best for you.
"You are still guards. You have duties to attend to, and you will attend to them - until the ships are ready to cast off, if you choose to leave for Osteth."
Once all is said, the guards are to resume their shifts and the refugees may go about their day.
- Osteth environment:
Rory also mentions this.Archengeia wrote:A few of the bandits ended up overhearing this and are also considering leaving shop, given how convincing Rory's words were, though one will approach Rory after the speech and ask why he didn't mention the terrifying terrain, flora, and fauna of the Osteth Range that they're taking these people to.

Regardless of the answer, Higaide is gonna try and get up, and get his joints moving again. Then he's gonna ask if he can see the Captain.

Higaide is informed that he was found in one of the hallways of the Sperca directly in front of some Eviscerators. The Olthoi admits, politely, that Higaide is currently confined to this room (the medbay) but she can request the captain's presence when she's not busy.

Kolson's actions.
First action: manage the Exchange:
Third action: interrogate Lefttenant. Who, what, how, why and when.
First action: manage the Exchange:
- Find a job for our informant. Preferably in the PTC.
- Put ten employees under the command of Qui-Gon to find us a military commander and a spymaster. GI checks all over the place.
- Find out who our most trustworthy employees are to set up an interview at a later date to give the right of passage through the Hub at a later date.
- If Biggs and Wedge return today from Irondell, one of them will be given command of Janwall's remnants.
Third action: interrogate Lefttenant. Who, what, how, why and when.

Re: March 20th
Zeiss and Advoc quickly learn that the factory capital of Glenden Woods is as bustling as ever. The Lord of Glenden Woods, one Fahran of Silentblade, is very well liked by the people but there's a decent amount of resentment amongst the lesser nobility to his rule and if one wanted to receive support from them against him and his machinations it would be fairly easy to convince them.
Rory sends off his recruits, hopeful as ever. He also spends some of his morning ensuring Zeiss' trip is quick, and then prepping the guardians for their long trip west.
Kolson sends out his people to do things. Ten GI checks later his people believe they may have found a few corporate people who might be willing to serve as spymaster or commander. And after a dice roll Kolson determines that 3 of your people are trustworthy enough for Hub duty. Biggs and Wedge do not return yet.
Higaide will have the opportunity to meet with the Olthoi Captain after several hours, as she's quite busy at the moment trying to coordinate medical relief for the town they are hovering over. When she does meet with him she informs him, politely, that she only has a few minutes to spare before she has to get back to work.

Re: March 20th
Solanion of Wintersong, Zeiss' father, no longer lives where he used to. At first Zeiss finds little to go off of, until he hears a few stories nearby about a few of his old friends; Antheol of Glaivestorm, Manus of Mechazod, and Julia of Floralwind. Apparently Julia had shacked up with the PTC and died in action trying to rob some local noble, and Manus died in action after having joined up with a local mercenary group fighting some Harpies in the region. Antheol is apparently still alive though, and has setup a general goods store which Zeiss has no problem finding. The two can catch up at their leisure, though Antheol is worried when Zeiss arrives at first and openly asks if Zeiss is there to take him out. Further discussion will also reveal that Antheol knows where Zeiss' father lives now.
Rory's rolls are average, and so are the trainees. Given another few days and it's likely this group would do fine as bandits or other thieves, but they would crumble before military regulars in a direct fight with superior discipline, formation, gear, experience, and leadership.
Kolson and Javan have no troubles finding local aristocrats who have an interest in the caravans of the region and who are more than willing to back any attempt to seize more power for themselves.
Higaide fails, miserably, to convince the Olthoi Captain of the urgency of his so-called plight, and he is accused outright of being a violent power-grabber given the situation. However while the Captain is chewing him out there's a loud squeeling sound and a large, green Olthoi comes scampering across the area and glomps Higaide. Kezrinthka asks how Higaide is, what he's doing here, and likes what he's been doing with his hair.

- What has Higaide done with his hair?
It's not the first time Higaide is stupidly berated and accused for trying to do the right thing, and is probably not the last, but it's certainly just as annoying as it has ever been. I mean no really, it just feels so rewarding when people start judging you and acting like they know you, when all you've asked is "hey could you drop me off?". And hey, it's not we're riding the very ship these guys trespassed into Alluvian territory to unilaterally claim (as in, steal), right? No, of course, Higaide is the violent power-grabbing one.
I'm saying that to explain the reason why even as Kezrinthka glomps him, his stare takes a few more seconds to disengage from the Captain, whose thoughtless prejudice has literally dumbstruck him worse than Kez's flying tackle. I mean imagine you're talking to someone, and out of the blue they snap accuse you of being a raving racist or something. If you can imagine the dumbstruck look you'd give that person, that's probably the look Higaide has on his face right now, that fails to get off even as he's flying through the air.
Then it does disengage, after a conscious effort, and Higaide turns his attention to Kezrinthka.
"Uh... Kez?"
He takes a hand to his hair, to see just what is going on up there.
"I've, uh... well, i'm on my feet, thanks to you guys." - notices he's on his back - "...figuratively speaking." - he tries to smirk as he adds.
"I had to get Sareth back from this nasty gang, back at Blackrust, who'd kidnapped him. In the end, i used an exit spell to get out of there, and ended up here, somehow, after they'd torn me to shreds. I don't understand Materia, but hey, at least we get to have ourselves a reunion, right? What about you, how've you been doing? Did you get my letter?"

Re: March 20th
Zeiss takes some time to catch up with Antheol, showing genuine relief that at least one of his childhood friends is still alive and after introducing Advoc, he will explain what he's been up to these last ten years (and no, I'm not going to mention the unbelievable details such as Tumeroks, Scions and Pinnacle stuff ). After a while, he will make Antheol an offer: to become the Exchange unofficial trading post in the region, if he so inclined to do so. Zeiss explains that he will need someone trustworthy in Glenden Woods to be the Exchange's liaison to coordinate the organization's trading activities and the relief efforts (oh yeah, might as well tell him about the deal I made with the Mites so he gets the full picture).
Whether Antheol accepts or refuses this offer, Zeiss will ask him if he knows where Sareth's father is. That man was probably an Undermarket agent and to have him on our side would be a huge advantage.
He will then leave to meet his father.
Note: burn one use of Persuasion to convince Antheol.

Re: March 20th
Kolson gets the Lefftenant in a dark room and beats them to death. Er I mean... the GM needs a little more direction to go off of for the interrogation instead of just 'we interrogate him'.
Zeiss spends some time with his old friend, who apparently has settled down significantly in the last few months, as the loss of his friends from old as well as some of his more recent acquaintances (to the war) has given him a bit of a bitter lining to his tone. He will agree without question to doing more 'mundane work' with Zeiss assuming Zeiss never mentioned the illegal, power-grabby aspects of the Exchange. If Zeiss did, rolls will be needed, since Antheol is completely disinterested in getting back into a mess. He also does not have any idea where Sareth's father is at the moment.
Rory's speech goes over surprisingly well. Several of the guards, unsurprisingly, do in fact sign up for 'get the hell out of Holtburg' duty but are willing to continue working up until that point. A few of the bandits ended up overhearing this and are also considering leaving shop, given how convincing Rory's words were, though one will approach Rory after the speech and ask why he didn't mention the terrifying terrain, flora, and fauna of the Osteth Range that they're taking these people to.
Higaide's interactions with Kezrinthka will have to wait until she is not busy with being in another state. Fortunately she does help convince the Captain to basically let Higaide and Sareth out immediately, along with a small potion he's been instructed to give Sareth to bring him out of his inflicted sleep whenever Higaide chooses to. Higaide steps out of the lower landing bay, which is completely packed with green and yellow-carapaced Olthoi who are running around busily treating wounded, carrying crates, and struggling to keep up with what seems like an overwhelming amount of dying and dead. The scent of ash, blood, and sweat overwhelms the Human. Amidst the smoke and heat Higaide can make out Gnolls and Banderlings and a few other races he doesn't quite recognize amongst the wounded, with both sides being treated equally. Just beyond is a the edge of a city that is still smoldering, though there are Olthoi as he speaks tending to the flames and hurriedly exploring the wreckages of homes and shops to find survivors. The entire scene assaults all of his senses, and at the sight of some of the pieces of the wounded prompts an automatically failed save, as Higaide has never seen the front line of a war before, and he kneels over and wretches on the spot. Taking a few moments to recoup, he slowly realizes he can hear something in the distance; a low roar, with a faintly metallic tint to it. It only takes a few more seconds to realize the battle is right there, barely a mile from where he stands beside the unconscious Sareth. Desperate, grasping, he asks one of the nearby Olthoi where they are and receives an answer in brief; they are at the city of Riela, a ways northwest of the city of Tufa.

Zeiss will reassure Antheol that he only wants him to oversee the financial aspects of the Exchange in the Glenden Woods region (as a middle manager) and help him set an outpost here. They may have to convince the local Bloc to join the Exchange, which would save a lot of time and resources, but that shouldn't prove to be too difficult considering the fact that Zeiss has access to the Hub.
Quick question: Zeiss wants to know what are the procedures to arrange a meeting with the Lord of Holtburg. Once this is done, he will thank Antheol for his time, wish him luck and go meet his fater.

- I can't help but notice you didn't answer my question there... is Zeiss telling Antheol the truth of what the Exchange is, or is he pretending they are simply another trading conglomerate or corporation or whatever?
Zeiss knows that any person can petition to meet a Lord, but generally only those amongst the aristocracy or military tend to actually get in to meet them. The nobility maintains two 'waiting lists' for any petitioners, one which is the real list and one which is the fake one to give people a feeling that they will get to meet their Lord eventually when, of course, they never will.

- Oh, I get it. I thought you were asking me if I said anything about the coup d'état. I don't, but I do mention the Exchange is "illegal" like the Undermarket was. Roll diplomacy, a use of Persuasion and a non-combat action point to convince him to accept.
