Fedler pouts when Mihai asks her to follow him and Steve, since he misunderstandood what she meant to say, but she still tags along and walks towards Velstar, near the back of the building. Yen, even though she's just a little girl, chooses to follow the group since no one is stopping her.

The warden smiles at Mihai, and asks with a soft voice, "What do you wish to know?"
- For Konrad only:
- Saemon tells Konrad, "The mayor is right, we still need to choose the battlefield."

- The way Saemon pronounces "mayor" sounds forced.

- Mihai isn't quite sure where to start.
"Ma'am, i'm not sure if you've been told any specifics about our encounter with the wolf. Truth is, we weren't able to beat it back or outrun it. It was right in striking distance of us when it just stopped cold. No growling or snarling or any further sign of aggression either. It just stood there."
Momentary pause, for emphasis.
"Would you have any idea why?"

- Velstar frowns, and takes a moment to think.
"This is... unusual."
She appears genuinely confused.
"It may have perceived a danger to itself in attacking you, but... no, it doesn't make sense. The three of you wouldn't have been enough to take it down, no?"
Her eyes lock with yours.
"What happened after that? Did it really not attack you? Did it do anything?

- "After a moment, it noticed a presence to it's flank. A pebble struck it, then the wolf lashed out in the direction it came from, turning it's attention away from us. We took the opening and made our escape. I don't think it chased us after."
He pauses for a second.
"Regardless, it was a solid six seconds that it could have jumped at us, and just stood there instead; more than enough time to do whatever damage it wanted - if it had wanted to, before it got distracted."

She searches her memories for anything that could prove an answer.
"How did a pebble event hit its flank? Magic should give it an increased awareness of its surroundings, and repel objects, not send them back towards itself."

- "Something threw that pebble - or someone, and i may have an idea who. When i came here earlier today, there were a few armed people about, including a man in chaimail. They came here escorting a dignitary from Lofell - the same person who hired us for a job not far from here, involving a theft of her property. But as she herself told me earlier, thats not all they're here to get back. She was holding captive a... creature, as she called it. As she described it, it looks like a small human with dragonfly wings, and constantly radiates Elemental energy. Apparently, she has good reason to believe it was taken from her as well, and now the thieves camped out not far from here have lost the specimen, but don't dare go into the forest in search of it for fear of the wolf."
Pause for a second.
"Well, when the wolf lashed out away from us, high-pitched a voice from that direction yelled out. It urged us to run away. Saved our lives."

- Velstar is clearly doubtful of this story. Then, without missing a beat, she surmises everything you just said in a few words, "A fairy. A fairy saved you."
She glances at the young redhead, who just shrugs at this explanation, then stares right back at Mihai. Yen takes Fedler's hand and holds it, while the warden now glances at Steve with a look that says Really?- OOC:
- Your characters know that fairies have always been considered creatures of fiction in this world.
I'll wait for Steve to interject, and for Konrad to do something since I want to avoid any serious time discrepancy.

He tilts his head. Irving chooses this moment to head outside to talk to the villagers and calm them down.
"I admit I've not been in a lot of scuffles, and I haven't studied military tactics, but I think we should pick someplace that would provide us with an advantage."
"An open field gives us more space to move around in without any trees in our way. Trees would provide cover, but the wolf is going to charge us, and we have you suppressing it's flares of magic. We should also be near the treeline in case we do end up needing cover."
The chief ponders for a few seconds. "To stay near the treeline makes sense. So if we have the location, the only thing left to do is to get its attention."
"Yes sir. I'll cut my hand bloody and start running ahead. Whether it announces its presence when it spots me or catches the scent, I'll wait until I've caught sight of it myself, then I'll run back to you."
Saemon blinks. "You're going to be bait?" He looks at Konrad with disbelief.
"I'll be fine, chief. I'll throw fire at it to slow it down a bit. Well, I suppose someone could come with me, but then we'd both be in trouble. We could lure it, but I've never had the patience for fishing, if you know what I mean. Plus, the moment even a few people go off alone together, it's bound to notice and run after them. Mihai, Steve, and Fedler were just out gathering leaves."
Saemon still appears uncertain. "That's an awfully dangerous plan, but I can't think of anything better to lure the wolf. " There's a quick look at Konrad's bag. "About these cupcakes... were you planning to have a picnic? I, huh, just don't get why you bothered to buy a dozen of these."
Konrad smirks. "Of a sort. Someone in town caught my eye, is all. So! Order any of your people brave enough to stand by you and me when we face this beast, and any practiced bowmen brave enough to shoot at it from a distance, to be ready to head out in an hour. Mihai and Steve will be positioned where they deem most strategic. A proper militia does not scatter or flee unless ordered, and not while they still have a leader. That's you, so it'll be your job to motivate your men to stand with us." You can do this, chief.
Saemon frowns at Konrad's obvious misdirection, but the red mage's fast-talk is good enough that he doesn't point it out. After some inner deliberation, he finally says, "I've never pretended that this was a proper militia." With a gesture, he points to Fedler. "She's one of the toughest people around here, and she came back from the forest in shock. I can't just order my people to be brave."
Konrad drops the polite facade. "Without Highwind's protection under their jurisdiction, you need to provide that protection for yourselves, especially when you don't have the gold or resources needed to hire other people to do it for you. If your people aren't brave or disciplined, then they can't protect this town. This is it, chief. This wolf is just one of the many threats you'll have to deal with on your own, and your people aren't prepared."
He leans towards Konrad. "But we're not on our own, since you and your colleagues were hired to deal with this threat. That's your job; to risk you life so that these people don't have to fight. Or are you saying you're backing out? That would be interesting to see, considering the speech you made to the whole village when you got here." He is visibly upset, like if he wasn't used to express his anger, but he appears ready to confront Konrad on this.
Konrad adds an air of authority/better understanding. "You damn well will be once we're gone! We're ready, Saemon. We're also being paid, though I'm beginning to question the worth of the manpower we've been promised in trade. Problem is that your people aren't. They're not brave, they're not disciplined, to be frank, I'm thoroughly unimpressed. Perhaps you should be absorbed by Highwind, trade your men for trained professionals."
"Your opinion is duly noted, Myrzen." He says this last word with prejudice. "And don't you worry about your mission, we'll take care of it. But for now, we have a wolf to kill, do we not?"
"Yes, chief."Konrad's usual politeness suddenly kicks in. "We'll be ready in an hour. Please excuse me, I need to catch up with my comrades."

Saemon opens the door leading to the plaza, through which your party can see that the villagers have now dispersed under Irving's influence, and closes it behind him. Just as Konrad approaches the rest of the group, he can hear Steve say, "...if anything? If we could get its help with the wolf our job would be much easier."

"It can't be," declares the warden. "But even if that kind of creature did exist, we have no way to contact it for help. "
Yen feels really out of place right now, hesitant as to what to do.

Konrad gawks at Mihai in bewilderment, and nods at Velstar's reasoning. "Besides, why would anyone have any speculations or concerns regarding its mental health unless it were a person? It's an animal, there's nothing to be done for it except put it down."

"Konrad has a point. Besides, the fairy helped us once already of its own accord. Perhaps it will do so again." Steve makes it a point to continue calling the creature a fairy. He trusts his own instincts, even in the light of trusted authority figures telling him he's wrong. He stretches and yawns. "I'm going to lie down for a bit, find my focus. I'll be ready. See you guys in an hour."

- It should be important to note I'm not going to be grinning like a fool all the time. That's merely part of my jovial greeting, when I'm happy, things are going according to plan, etc. I'm just super polite when I meet people for the first time. It would be creepy if I just smiled all the time.
Konrad leaves the plaza, exiting the city hall to find Fedler. Is Yen following her home? Are they related?

The villagers have almost finished setting up the plaza for the festivities; garlands are up in the air, braziers are ready to be lighted, and many tables have been placed for an eventual banquet. There are many little groups of people talking between themselves, troubled by the recent attack of the wolf, but Irving's influence must bet at work since they're a lot calmer than when Steve, Mihai and Fedler came back from the forest. Speaking of the hunter, she and Yen are walking south, walking along the row of buildings facing west. They're still holding hands. Once you catch up to her, she stops to turn around, a little surprised to see you there.
"...I will be."
She seems to catch on.
"Oh. Don't worry, I'll be there. For the wolf I mean."
"Yeah," adds Yen. "Fedler never quits."
The redhead smiles at the little girl's words.
"...I will be."
