EDIT: I'm so honestly trying to figure out how you guys calculate your skill scores (not the stats, i got those down), like, with those ability and rank modifiers, i'm so lost, i kinda want to ask how you do it, but at this point it's getting embarassing.

Finally made an account, I would of been quicker but I hadn't nailed down my characters name and I wanted that as my username. I'm themeddlingmonk on the google forums and I should have my character's back story nailed down by tomorrow, at which point I'll tackle or the confusing D&D sheets and stats and stuff. I'd just like to say, I think it's amazing the way we've all come together to get this organised, and I am both excited and terrified in anticipation of the adventure's beginning XD

K: It's essentially this:

Attributes are anywhere from 0 to infinity and are STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, and CHA . The trick is that the baseline for these attributes actually start at 10. The modifier at 10 is zero (0). For every 2 points it is raised or lowered, you get to raise or lower its modifier. For example, if I raised my STR from a 10 to a 11, I would still have a modifier of 0. Now, if I raised it from an 11 to 12, I would have a modifier of +1. Raising it to 13 would still remain a +1, and then 14 would be a +2. If I lose STR and it becomes an 8, it is now a -1 modifier.

Each skill has an associated attribute (such as STR, INT, etc). Your base score in that skill is exactly that modifier. If I had a STR of 14 (which is a +2), then my score in any skills that depends on that attribute is +2.

Now, if I add ranks in a skill using skill points, I can further increase that skill. Let's take Athletics for example, a STR skill. My base is +2, as discussed before. If I add 2 skill points to it (which are put under skill ranks) then it becomes the sum of those: +4.

There are other misc modifiers that you can get in certain circumstances, like racial bonuses, class bonuses, feat bonuses, etc, but you'll see those specifically spelled out. Unless otherwise noted, those stack with each other.

Now, combine the attribute, the skill ranks you have invested in it, and any misc bonuses, and you have your total skill. This is the number that you add to your dice roll (a d20) whenever you use that skill. So, if I rolled a d20 to perform an athletics skill (at a +4 for me) and got an 11, I would add (11 + 4) and receive a total of 15 for that roll.

Make more sense? Sorry, not the best instructor, but hopefully that helps.

AC is armor, which is an enemy (or you) have to roll in order to hit an opponent with a mundane weapon (sword, bow, etc). If the attack does not equal at least the AC, it is considered to have missed because it either hit your armor and was deflected or you dodged out of the way. This is normally 10 + your DEX bonus + your armor bonus. There are other misc modifiers that can increase this, but they will tell you in their description if this happens.

Now, AC is technically broken down in to a lot of categories, but you normally just want to keep track of your Touch AC and Flat-footed AC. Here is what they mean:

Touch AC is essentially how good you are at dodging without factoring in your armor. This is normally 10 + your DEX modifier. Certain special actions, feats, and classes can adjust this, although it will normally be spelled out as a special bonus. It is important to know your Touch AC because some effects ignore your armor. Because of that, you need to know how good you are at jumping out of the way, since that's your only defense.

Flat-footed AC is how good your armor is at protecting you without you taking any action to avoid the attack. It does not include your DEX bonus to AC or any other dodge bonus you have from feats, classes, etc. This is useful to know for when you are caught off-guard and unaware of an attack. This is typically 10 + your armor AC bonus, although special gear, classes, feats, etc can raise this.

Unless otherwise noted, use your normal AC for weapon attacks.

Oh yeah, not all skills are avaliable for all classes. There's a list of skills allowed for each class in this document, first page. Max rank of a skill is [total character level + 3].
I don't know how Archengeia approaches cross-class skills tho, which is skills outside the training of your class.

Oh yes, thanks for mentioning that. Essoje is right.

To put it in a nutshell, if a skill is NOT a class skill (this is noted in Archengeia's document) then it costs double to train in that particular skill. Multi-classing can get around that.

Oh and feats? How do I know how much feats I have when I start? I know I have a +1 feat because I am an elf, but that's all...
Unless otherwise noted in your race and class, you get to pick a feat at every level evenly divisible by 3 (3, 6, 9, etc). You get a starting feat at first level in addition to any racial bonus. So, if you have an additional +1 feat, then you get 2 feats at first level.

Rogues are proficient with light armor, but not with shields. The proficiencies are usually listed in the class description.

Thanks both.

That was really helpful. I think i can take care of that part now. Just one thing i'd like to make sure i've got straight, but the available skills vary according to what class i'm playing, right?

Like, i'm checking d20 for monk and it has - for Skill (Attribute) - Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Hide (Dex), etc.

Just one final question, if you don't mind, but do the the skills benefit from the modifier, or do i have to distribute the points (would Escape Artist and Hide both benefit from +2 Dex, or do i have to give that+2 to either or +1 to both)?

They both get +2. You don't have to split up the attribute bonuses, it is just assumed that if that skill is associated with that attribute, its modifier is applied to it.
